Since this is a hockey website, I think we should give some love to:

Fifty Mission Cap - the Tragically Hip

I mean, any song that opens with:

Bill Barilko disappeared that summer,
he was on a fishing trip.

The last goal he ever scored
won the Leafs the cup

They didn't win another until 1962,
the year he was discovered.

Has to be huge right?

ps. New Orleans is Sinking was also 90s... good track

I like some stuff that Nirvana did but they were really nothing remarkable in my mind...had the Pixies and Sonic Youth not shown them how to construct their songs back in the 80s and had Nirvana not blatantly ripped off Killing Joke then I doubt anyone would ever have even heard of them. Perfect example of being in the right place at the right time. Pearl Jam and Soundgarden were much more musically proficient bands (though I never liked Pearl Jam much)

As far as bands that changed the music landscape though here's a few albums that stand out for me as shaping the music landscape:

1) Snoop - Doggystyle and Dr Dre - The Chronic completely turned hip hop on its head and introduced that smooth west coast style
2) REM - Automatic for the People - easily their best album on the 90s
3) Radiohead - Pablo Honey, The Bends, OK Computer
4) RHCP - Blood Sugar Sex Magik... Frusciante takes this band to a whole new level

And why has no one mentioned Billy Ray Mullet's Achy Breaky Heart? LMAO
I agree with you about Blood Sugar... Incredible album and the beginning of their legacy, in my opinion. I'm not thrilled to hear their latest album with Josh taking over for John.

To me, the most overlooked band of the entire decade is Stone Temple Pilots. Each album changes slightly while they stay true to the music that they want to create. This band would have been just as big as any other band of the decade had it not been for Scott's drug problems which lead to an absence from the touring world.

Smells Like Teen Spirit = Pixies rip off

Sorry, had to say it - even Cobain said it sounded like a Pixies song, so has Grohl.

If we're talking 90's, let's throw in some Pixies...Alec Eiffel,Bird Dream of the Olympus Mons, Dig For Fire, Alison, Head On...

The nicest touch in that song (50 Mission Cap) is the background vocal in the last chorus:

Also, Nautical Disaster - absolutely amazing song (my favourite Hip track ever), has to be in the mix.

I was 13-23 during the 90s.
That age range has always defined the popular music choice of its era.

Smells Like Teen Spirit was the song of the decade.
Like it or hate it... it defined the decade.

Early 90s grunge is my 2nd favourite music era of all-time... way, way, way behind late 60s rock.
(This from a guy with a slowly collected 11,000+ songs on his iPod)

For the record, I don't hate Teen Spirit, I just think its a bit over-revered.

I can't believe no one has mentioned the Spice Girls, ziga-zig.
