Visentin (PHX) and Pickard (COL) are 2 prospects I'm eyeing becuase they are with teams that seemingly have uncertain and short term goalie situations in the bigs. Are either prospects good to have on their own merit and will they see some NHL action sooner rather than later?

Both are several years away. I don't see either one being able to successfully make the jump at a young age.
That said, I think Visentin has a better opportunity to move up with the Yotes. Pickard has Varlamov and Desjardins ahead of him.

Well if you have farm teams and room for these guys then they're definately worth a pickup.
Visentin is in great place in Phoenix as they have no long-term #1 goalie in the organisation. However a lot can change before Visentin is ready as he's still years away from NHL. But still worth owning in deep leagues with farm teams. Calvin Pickard is also in great situation although Colorado went and acquired young potential long-term #1 goalie this summer. Varlamov still has lots to prove and is injury prone. Pickard could very well some day become #1 goalie in Colorado. Like Visentin he's years away from NHL so if you pick him up then be patient with him.

Actually from what ive been hearing they really like Visentin. Their going to give him a real look this training camp(ofc he wont make it) but he has a shot in 2013.
Coyotes Goaltending situation is very shakey. |

I think the Coyotes can continue going the UFA route with so many cheap options out there and the Canucks/Kings have to clear up their goaltending eventually.

Visentin has the better chance to snag a starting job and I'd go with him. Mike Smith is a short term solution in Phoenix.

Thanks Guys! I'm admitted weak on goalie prospects but I have the opportunity to get both for my farm on a new keeper. So that's what I'll do! Rep spread around when I get some more room.

I like Pickard as a goalie more than Visentin but if one is further ahead at this point it's Visentin due to the Yotes goalie situation.

With goalies even moreso than other positions, I've always been of the opinion to draft for skill not situation. Schneider is in about the worst situation imaginable but his skill makes opportunities for him.
It seems like so often we hear about a young goalie being in a great situation to take over the starting gig and his value his gets inflated by that... Then the team goes out and signs/trades for a veteran goalie and his value plummets. My prime example of that would be Bobrovsky. Mediocre skill level, great situation. The situation disappears, and his value goes with it. Anyway before I get side tracked... I like Calvin Pickard's upside a bit more, and as long as you can keep him on a prospect list for a few years I wouldn't worry too much about what's happening in Colorado. He just has to keep playing as good as he did this past year and his chances will come.
