Default New league Prospect Draft

I joined a new league this offseason. Its the Dynasty league in my sig. Our first draft is coming up on Wednesday.

For this draft we will be ranking the 30 NHL teams and we will pick 10 prospects from the 2 teams we pick. That's 10 total prospects not 10 from each.

The teams are outdated, May 2011, so this doesn't reflect players who were traded after 5/11, so Brayden Schenn is still with LA, Tim Erixon is still with CGY, etc. We draft the teams as they were in May 2011.

It also doesn't include 2011 Draftees. I think that the GP limit on the prospects is around 40 to 50 games played so they don't include players such as Cam Fowler, Jeff Skinner, Tyler Seguin, John Carlson, and Taylor Hall as well as other prospects who have played a number of NHL games. For goalies its around 30 GP. No Bernier but Schneider is available.

I have the first overall pick in this draft as well as the last (28th).

My other draft picks in the other drafts aren't as impressive. (10th in Amatuer Draft(the rest of the prospects) and 12th in Inaugural Draft(NHL Players)).

I was wondering based on these stipulations how would you rank the NHL teams prospects. I don't need the full ranking (although that would be nice) I just need 1st (maybe top 3) and the bottom 5.

I'm thinking that I should either take Detroit or Washington first overall. And that I would rank Philadelphia and Winnipeg as the bottom two. Am I on the right track here?

Edit: Whoops put Atlanta instead of Winnipeg, my B.

I don't think that Detroit or Washington are the way to go personally. Sure they have great NHL teams but there isn't a whole lot of room for prospects to make an impact any time in the near future (especially Detroit). I would honestly look at a team like St.Loius (Tarasenko, Schwartz, Allen, Sonne), Boston (Spooner, Caron, Sauve) or Tampa Bay (Connolly, Aston, Panik). Edmonton is also an option but your draft is 1 year too late to land Hall (still get RNH).

I would probably rank Edmonton near the bottom. I can't take RNH, Hall or Omark in this draft. I would like to get a potential superstar forward in my first pick in this draft and I think Evgeni Kuznetsov and Tomas Tatar have that potential. You make a valid point with St. Louis though.

St-Louis would easily be my first choice. Another top 3 would maybe be the Islanders.

As for the bottom it's hard to say who's going to reach you but Philidelphia is one since most of their rookies are already in the NHL, as well as Dallas Stars since I can't think of any of their rookies really.

I would look at Florida with Huberdeau, Gudbranson, Markstrom, Dadonov, Bjugstad, Howden
On young elite player at every position and a bunch of young forwards with not a lot of top end talent in front of them.

Also Ottawa has Rundblad, Lehner, Zibanejad, Butler possibly Filatov (44 games), Puempel,

Note: I'm also in this league. We are basing our ranking off of a file that doesn't include every prospect as mentioned, but there are still some gems in there.

I'm picking last (14th) in this farm filler so telling how I ranked doesn't effect me at all since these teams will all be gone. I ranked all 30 teams in about 15 minutes so I'm sure it could be better. I added some notable players too.

1. OTT - Silfverberg, Greening, Butler, Condra, Rundblad, Lehner
2. DET - Tatar, Jarnkrok, Mursak, Nyquist, B. Smith
3. VAN - Hodgson, Schroeder, Tanev, Schneider, Lack
4. WAS - Perreault, Kuznetsov, Holtby
5. STL - Tarasenko, Schwartz, Jake Allen

So ya, a little different when we are choosing from a rigid list of "almost" all the teams brightest prospects. My list including names might make ranking the top 5 easier for others.

Good luck!

Dadonov, Huberdeau, Puempel and Zibanejad aren't elligible for this draft. Filatov is but he is on Columbus.

Haha, thanks Wumpus. I knew there was another dobberite in our league but I wasn't sure who it was. Thought I recognized your icon.

The worst is probably the Flames, Jets, Wild, and Flyers.

The best would be, in no particular order:

Florida: Bjugstad, Howden, Gudbranson, Shore, Markstrom

Washington: Kuznetsov, Orlov, Galiev, Holtby, Eakin

Ottawa: Rundblad, Filatov, Lehner, Cowen, Silfverberg, Butler, Wiercioch, Stone

St. Louis: Tarasenko, Schwartz, Allen, Cole, Binnington

Long Island: Niederreiter, Petrov, de Haan, Nelson, Kabanov, Cizikas, Lee

Detroit: Nyquist, Jarnkrok, Tatar, Mursak, Smith

According to your league stipulations I would go with the Los Angeles Kings.

1 - Brayden Schenn
2 - Jonathan Bernier
3 - Andrei Loktionov
4 - Tyler Toffoli
5 - Slava Voynov

You get the #1 goalie prospect in the world (according to many including goalie guru Justin Goldman), One of the the top prospects in Brayden Schenn, a solid D-man in Voynov (76 GP - 15 G - 36A - 51 PTS ) and Loktionov and Toffoli are also 2 other very good NHL prospects.
