Default prospect spot

our league is entering its second year of our prospect spot experiment. We each get one spot to hold a player in, you can trade him, keep him or drop him, he has no salary so there no increase from year to year, and he doesnt count towards your protected list numbers. We can hold that guy there for as long as we want. As an example, if you landed Taylor Hall, you could keep him there at no salary, no increases no worries and then activate him for $10 when hes producing like an elite talent.

On draft day we must make our decision wether to move our prospects into our lineups, hold into him or drop him in favour of another prospect. Last year i secured Jack Campbell into that spot, after his play at the WJHC i though that was a solid move. This year i will have the 6th overall pick (which lands me in Coutourier territory) and i've been asking myself if i should drop Campbell and move a skater into that spot. i know Campbell is likely at least another season away form landing an NHL spot, but i'm starting to get that feeling he's too far away to let some of the skater talent skip by on draft day. the draft portion consists of guys still in the player pool and guys that have not yet played a game in the NHL, but have NHL club affiliation.

We start 3 goalies in an 11 team league, so they are somewhat of a valuable commodity, but a high scoring phenom is too. there will be lots to choose from, as it seems the talent in these prospects is getting higher and higher and both teh FWD and DEF spots.

any recommendations? or am i getting swept up in the hype on the boards?

Campbell is more than a year away from any NHL duty. I would say he's 3-4 years away from NHL action (backup). I am not a JCampbell believer at all. He was atrocious in every game I watched him play for Windsor in last season. He just doesn't excite me at all.

I wouldn't have any issue with you dropping him out of that prospect spot to use on a forward.

In leagues that have limits on the number of prospects you can protect, I would suggest that you want to always have players that are imminent or in the NHL. Having a player that is a number of seasons away, well, where is the advantage in that. Players not in the NHL can have their value rise, but not to the same degree as a player that is not in the NHL. They're not producing practical points that you could use to race your team. Thus, I would rather have a Burmistrov/Johansson (Washington)... young guy that is in the NHL. Of course I'd rather have Taylor Hall... These players might be able to be used ASAP. Others in the league are all enthused about them because they are so young and we're still developing opinion in regard to their upside. Waiting more than a year is too patient, as far as I'm concerned. Where goaltending is concerned, have a peek at Al Montoya. He was drafted 6th overall in 2004 and he's still not a secure commodity.

yeah I think your goal should be to try to get a blue chipper into that slot who will be NHL ready sooner rather than later, that would seem to me to be the best strategy

I agree with the others. I'd drop Campbell because he is too far away from the NHL, and will certainly only start off his career as a backup. It could take him 5+ years to become a starter.

Of the kids in the 2011 draft alone, there are many I'd take over Campbell, including pretty much everyone that went in the top 15 range and many others who went higher than that.

I'd also very much look at players from other drafts who may still be available. In an 11-team league with only 1 roster spot available for a prospect, I'd assume that many good prospects from other years are available, such as Tarasenko, Kuznetsov, Granlund, Schenn, Johansson, Elliott, Rundblad, Coyle, etc. By my count, only 11 prospects should be "owned" right now. Campbell is not a top 10 prospect.

thanks and rep to all so far. still appreciate more feedback though. i figured i was on the right track...but best to double/triple check.

And the comparison to Montoya (who i also own right now) was the reason that sparked the whole thing in the first place.
