The days of the Red Wings finding "steals" are gone in my opinion. Every team has an equal chance at these "steals" with teams improving their scouting department.

In saying that, the Red Wings development system is what makes their prospects so valuable as they tend to have a high success rate of turning out eventual pros. Of course they aren't all "elite" but when you can develop your prospects into serviceable professionals then that is extremely valuable.

Heads up gentlemen, Rensfeldt was drafted by the Sarnia Sting in the CHL Import draft.

No word on whether Rensfeldt has confirmed that he will report but based on the fact that sarnia deleted on of their recent high import picks from previous year to make room for Rensfeldt it looks as though Sarnia will try hard for him to report.

If he does, yours truly will have all kinds of scouting reports on him and the ton of other star players in a sting uniform.

Awesome! I hope it's some good news instead of the doom and gloom that we have in this thread so far...

digging up an old post here while trying to find some new updates on Rensfeldt.. so Rensfeldt looks like a big ol bust... and Pulkkinen might not be the steal he was thought to be...

but .... DAMN Gustav Nyquist is sure looking like a 4th round steal!

Unsigned by Chicago and was able to be redrafted at the 2012 draft...30 teams passed on him. Hes currently an unrestricted free agent playing for Malmo in the 2nd tier league in Sweden, 2nd on his team points.

Honestly, other than that I have no clue what the deal is with this guy. I thought for sure he'd be drafted again, even if it was in the later rounds...but teams passed. Obviously something going on here that turns teams off big time. Must be something significant for Chicago to turn down signing a player they drafted 35th overall and giving him 3 years on an ELC to round out his game.

Just for fun and because I'm bored, went back and checked out the 2010 draft, and some notables Chicago could have drafted instead of this fail:

Alex Petrovic
Justin Faulk
Jon Merrill
Brett Bulmer
Devante Smith-Pelly
Ryan Spooner
Tyler Toffoli
Calvin Pickard
Calle Jarnkrok
Jason Zucker

and thats just in the 2nd round.

Equally baffling to me is the case of Petr Straka, CBJ 2nd round pick that year the Blue Jackets chose not to sign, re-entered the draft and was passed over. Currently leading his QMJHL team in goals and points. Unrestricted.

Meh, hindsight is hindsight. You're not going to win every draft pick and it's not like all those players you listed have proven anything either, except for a couple. Maybe Ludvig will be better than some of these guys one day...who knows? Probably not though.

Ludvig will be signed one day if he earns it and if he wants to play in the AHL. My guess is he probably signs in the Elite League and doesn't play in North America until he can earn a one-way, if that ever happens. Look at a guy like Carl Soderberg who has destroyed Sweden over the last few years but he never wants to come over unless he can get a one-way.

As for Straka, he is an overager so his current totals are not that surprising. He had a terrible year last year. I could see somebody signing him to an ELC after the year is over though, to at least get him for their AHL team. I don't know too much about him, but I'm guessing he is one-dimensional-ish since his teammate Jakub Culek also had a bad year yet was still signed by Ottawa because he was good defensively. Or maybe Columbus just didn't like him, I don't know.

Lesson: Do not buy into the Swedish hype machine. Definitely a case of buying too early. Hopefully its a league with a deep farm team.
