That won't be normal. It is an isolated event... it won't carry through a full-season - so, really... ice-time is not a long-term factor.

Coaches buckle down in the playoffs... so let's be careful about extrapolating on "Playoff Ovechkin" and "Playoff Hunter".

In the regular season, OV's ice-time was limited only a few times (maybe 5 games?).
Look at his end-of-March... ice-time still there.
Hunter just buckled down on him in those last two regular season games.
And Hunter has limited him a couple key games in the playoffs. (Let's not focus on these isolated events too much.)
Mostly - Hunter is pulling him when the Capitals have the lead. Having the lead means the Caps have scored some goals... so OV probably has some points.
It's guarding a lead where Ovechkin's ice-time is limited. (See his lowest ice-times, narrow-wins)

Over the course of a season, he'll get his minutes.
There was never a long period of diminished ice-time in the regular season.
He'll get 20min/game.

Regular season, the ice-time won't be a factor.
Yes, but if they continue to have success with this system in the playoffs, I'd be surprised to not see it implemented at least to an extent during the regular season.

Interesting quote from Knuble about it in 30 Thoughts this week.

Just wanted to beat an old horse here, I love horses so that is just a figure of speech to you PETA guys.

Ovecchkin - 48 GP- 32G- 24 A= 56P
Giroux -48GP - 13G - 35A=48P

Not a huge gap, but still some guys said Ovechkin was done and he leads the 3 year race with 8 points. Anyone want to change there vote or is the Ovechkin downfall and Giroux dominance coming.

Lmao, can't believe I missed this thread Giroux never was and is not in the same league as Ovie. Can not even believe that so many of the people I have the utmost respect for took Giroux here. Not a critique just very surprised...

methinks giroux slots in the #5-10 spot behind the big four for the next while.

All depends on which Ovie shows up. Predicting him and the Caps as a whole anymore is pointless - they are all over the place. Elite skill and offensive dynamo when he's "on."

Even for next season I'm saying Ovi especially with what Oates has shown he can do to ignite the offense. Green when healthy is still an efficient source of production which helps balance Ovi's stats, and we all saw Backstrom get nearly an assist a game pace because of Ovi playing RW, no one really saw that coming. The beauty is teams adapted to Ovi at left, put him on the right, teams weren't prepared, let them prepare for him on the right, move him back to the left, he's not the type of player you can ever completely silence.
