A bit of a background, this is the deepest league I've ever played in. I auto drafted while the others live drafted, and unfortunately I didn't rank starting pitchers high enough. So this will be my challenge to remain competitive.
Yahoo 1-year Roto, 20 teams, Daily, Max games/innings=162/1475 R,HR,RBI,SB,AVG,OPS,W,SV,K,HLD,ERA,WHIP C,1B,2B,SS,3B,IF,3OF,2Util,4SP,3RP,2P,4BN,3DL C:Suzuki; 1B:Butler; 2B:Cuddyer(1,O); SS:Tulowitzki; 3B:Beltre; IF:Walker; OF:Victorino, Swisher(1), Pagan; Util:J.Montero(C), Aviles(2,S,3) SP:Cahill, Buerhle, Nicasio, Duffy, Delgado, Wieland, Pettitte; RP:Johnson, Capps, Aceves(SP), Shaw, Cishek, Coke(SP) DL:Farnsworth, D.Hudson, B.Anderson Analysis/observations: - Standing: 7th (not bad considering my weak pitching) - Trades: have made two that I feel have improved my squad and/or had identified a need: March 30: Gave Torii Hunter/Collmenter for Pagan/Buerhle; April 6: Gave Fielder/Konerko for Butler/Tulowitzki- Moves: have made quite a few already to tweak where necessary, especially with pitching - Offense: one of the strongest so happy to have no bench for now. - Pitching: weak other than saves, and amongst the lowest in innings pitched. Also doesn't help that my best pitcher is hurt. - Have the 4th waiver priority, and saving it for now in case someone makes an impatient drop. - Will give other details as requested. Going forward: - Trades: looking at those with strong pitching and weak hitting. Don't want to rush it and make a panic move though as it's still early. - Considering dropping Suzuki as I have Montero but nothing of interest on FA so far. Willing to consider suggestions though. - Should get a starting pitching boost when Hudson and Duffy return, giving Pettitte a flier and hopefully Anderson returns early. - Any other thoughts? Thanks in advance.

Any thoughts would be greatly appreciated.
My offense has taken a bit of a hit with Swisher's injury since I have no bench but might hold off for a few days to see how long he may be out. Also Beltre is hobbled so hopefully it's a short-term thing. I need to keep pace with pitching so although some weak options I'd rather not miss out on potential good starts/appearances/holds just yet. If I start getting more injuries on offense though this could really hurt my chances of being competitive. The FA list is really thin.

I'll try some advice (though my ROTO team, your league, is sucking dust).
*Your IF/OF looks great. No need to do anything there. *Your trades were amazing. Big wins on BOTH, IMO. 1. I got in trouble in your league by trying to eat some IP to gain a few W & K. It has hurt my ERA/WHIP. So, be cautious in that department and don't worry about being low in IP for the next two months. Perhaps end-May you re-evaluate. 2. Work on HOLDS. Like Hits/BkS in hockey, it is the "lost" category. People don't track it well. Holds can usually be found through research. And it is especially great to find a SP-eligible pitcher (like Coke) that can do that for you. I'd prefer to have a higher K/9 middle reliever over Weiland. Even guys who aren't currently HOLDing on games who may get a chance. 3. When Montero becomes C, yes - drop K.Suzuki. Take the AB for now though. 4. Research to find another SP via trade. I don't know all the tools, but apparently the BABIP is the lucky/unlucky statistic and with just a month of starts (5-7 per pitcher) there is bound to be some very unlucky pitchers. 5. Can you list the top 5 players available at SP & RP? That is usually helpful. Good looking team though in a 20-team league!!! |

Thanks Pengwin.
1. Yeah what I am trying to focus on to keep steady on my IP is matchups - I'm not just picking up any player. However, given the league depth, most of the better matchups are still risks. I will take your advice into consideration. It's just that I don't want to be too far below pace that it will be difficult to catch up. 2. Yeah it's important, and I have three holds pitchers. Including picking up Coke for the SP slot, and I may drop Wieland for a SP eligible middle reliever. I had picked Wieland up just a couple days ago since he had two decent matchups this week. Unfortunately last night didn't quite pan out. 3. Montero is already C eligible but I haven't been able to decide on an adequate replacement for Suzuki yet. It's not easy for me given that I don't get to see any games so I have to do research a fair bit when I have the time. The best players appeared to be guys that weren't regular starters, so need to see if anyone undervalued or struggling may be worthwhile pickups or to be watched. 4. This will be the ultimate challenge as many teams are well aware of the value of good pitchers in this league. I will need to have a good look at pitchers whom I could target and determine which hitters I am willing to part with. It may be worth waiting a few more weeks as it may be the time when managers really start panicking. As well with my offense, if it keeps going well then I might have a shot. However with Swisher out and Beltre hobbled, I might wait until my squad is healthy. 5. I won't list per Yahoo rank as there are actually some non-active players ranked higher! Here are a few notables though: SP: Morton, Chen, Happ, Richard, Pavano, Volstad, Corbin-waivers until May 4 SP eligible relievers: Duensing, Rogers, Gorzelanny, Kendrick-when Lee returns, Axelrod-just called up to replace Crain, others I'm sure I'm not aware of RP: loads I've never heard of. Peralta with most holds.

JA Happ is guy you may want to consider.
His K/9 & K/BB are the best of his career. He also has a G/F rate that is best of his career (more ground balls, good). All indicators that he is putting the ball in the strike zone and letting his fielders take care of things. (On the negative side, his Opp BA is highest ever... too). He won tonight with a decent 6 IP outing. You never know, perhaps this is the year he pulls a "Mike Smith" (Phoenix - G). There are lowered expectations for Houston this year, so maybe he is relaxing and just "going out and playing". I'm on the fringe of grabbing him in much shallower leagues. |
