Default Goaltending Article – Part 2

Thanks for the goalie article. I have a few follow up questions:

1) Is Harding worth a late round draft pick as someone who might steal the starters job this year? I know that once the guy in front has a big contract it is harder to steal the job but I feel that in Minny they don’t let that affect them as much as other NLH teams would (prefect example is the situation last year).

2) I didn’t really follow it too closely last year but I was under the impression that Budaj was seen more as a ‘fill-in’ guy rather then the long term starting goalie. I know he played well but I kind of felt that Colorado might be looking for another goalie via trade or free agency. Are they in the market at all for a goalie upgrade?

3) I remember when everyone was really high on Marek Schwarz as the Blues future goalie. Is he not I the picture this year? Will he be a starter any time soon?

Harding could steal the job, but I see the Wild bringing him along slowly, and Backstrom should continue his very strong play.

Budaj is a legitimate starter. Still struggles with consistency, but I blame that more on the Avalanche\'s porous defense than him. Expect solid numbers next season.

Schwarz still has to mature. He has all the natural ability and talent in the world, but must continue to improve consistency and positioning. He still has franchise goalie potential, but he will continue to be brought along slowly by the Blues.

Angus my good man. Do you think now is the time to draft M.Smith.?.? Its always good to get a good jump on your competitors.? He seems like the kind of guy that could steal the starters role. i.e.Budaj Backstrom Mason..

Zorro.

I\'d say so. Turco is the man in Dallas but Smith may force a trade or at least put up good totals for 20-25 games. He is a tweener like Chris Mason used to be.

Following up on the question of \'smoothfun\'. He also mentions Toivonen.

Question #1: I am interested to know if you consider that Toivonen will ever regain his status as a starter? If he does, I don\'t think that it will be in Boston but I wonder if he will ever be a \'starter\' again.

Question #2: I don\'t see Thomas Greiss in the list of 100 Goalies. I considered with the trade of Toskala that Greiss would backup Nabokov. Your thoughts?

I\'d keep Turco no question.

I personally have no idea. Goalies are so tricky to figure out, especially young ones with franchise potential who suddenly begin to flop.

Greiss has been on my radar for a while, I even have him in a few of my FHL leagues. I think the Sharks will opt for a veteran backup, and continue to bring Greiss along slowly.

with manny going to boston i would think that either thomas or toivonen will be packing as they have trask waiting in the wings gaining valuable experience.toivonen gets lots of positive feedback so he might make a good fit for a team like chicago, low cost high return.thanks angus , turco is ranked high by dobber , just getting nervous as smith continues to improve .
