I'm filling in for TK today, who promised to fill in for me at a time of my choosing. I'll make sure I pick this day wisely. Anyway, let's get right to this.
STUDS No place like home The Detroit Red Wings won their 19th consecutive home game which ties the second-longest streak in NHL history. Tonight, the victim was the Anaheim Ducks, who fell 2-1 in a shootout. Most impressive is that the Wings have kept this streak alive despite Jimmy Howard's injury. Those who managed to pick up Joey MacDonald on the waiver wire are being rewarded. I do not foresee a goalie trade in the near future. What a Burn Brent Burns is on fire lately with eight points (all assists) in his last four games. Five of those points came on the power play. Unfortunately, a PP-heavy point total usually leads to a hit on the plus-minus side, and Burns is no exception as he is minus-2 during those games. Tonight he posted three assists in a 5-3 win over the Chicago Blackhawks including two with the man advantage. Add in four shots and two blocks and you have yourself a roto stud for the evening. Avalanche of awesome David Jones had two assists, plus-2, a penalty, two shots and a hit. Paul Stastny had a goal, an assist, a penalty, three shots, two hits and 16/23 faceoffs. Honourable mentions Rock you like a Hurricane: Eric Staal had a goal, an assist, plus-2, two shots and 6/12 faceoffs while Tuomo Ruutu increases his signing/trade value with two assists, five shots and two hits. Joey MacDonald rewarded the waiver wire sniffers with 29 saves on 30 shots in a victorious effort. DUDS Blackhawk down Corey Crawford continued his up-and-down season with a real downer, as he allowed five goals on 27 shots which is good for a .815 save percentage. Crawford has lost five in a row and has not won since January 18. Blowing over Unlike two of their teammates, Jeff Skinner and Jussi Jokinen were not nearly as successful tonight. Both were held off the score sheet and finished minus-2. Both were also held under 50% at the dot as Skinner finished 5/13 and Jokinen 1/3. Ward-robe malfunction I can't really blame Ward for what happened in overtime but the goal still counts against his total and the L is tied to his name. Justin Faulk foolishly turned the puck over in the dying seconds of overtime leading to Ryan O'Reilly beating Ward for the game winning goal. This is a second overtime loss in a row for Ward. Dis-honourable mention Ducks not in a row Ryan Getzlaf has not had the greatest of seasons and tonight he did not provide the spark needed to push his team past the Red Wings to end their massive home winning streak. He did not register any points and finished 7/19 at the faceoff circle in 23 minutes. With Joey MacDonald, primarily an AHL goaltender, in the crease poolies had to figure there was a chance that Getzlaf could post a point or two.
