Late Round Gem is an unknown quantity at this point
Dobber Sports Prodigy
Default Jordan Weal

Came across him just doing some drifting from hockeydb page to page. He's crushing the rest of his teammates in points.

How good is he?

Player he is comparable to...?

Future projections/thoughts?

I just looked into him now for the first time on hockeydb, so I know nothing about him that isn't on that site. Damn that kid is small. Hockeydb has him at 5'8, 158lbs. That can't be good. Even if he is tearing up the WHL he's way too small to make it to the show imo.

He is also almost 20 and in his fourth full season in the WHL so its not as impressive that he is tearing it up.

Tyler Johnson leading goal scorer in the WHL last year with 53 (115 pts) but he is 5'9'' 165 lbs - and went undrafted so hes in the AHL now with Norfolk.

Ryan Howse second leading goal scorer in WHL last year (also was his 4th season), 0 pts in 17 AHL games this season.

What im trying to point out is that the age at which these guys achieve the numbers is as if not more important than the numbers themselves. If you take a look at overall scoring last year in the WHL the top 3 were Linden Vey 116 pts, Tyler Johnson 115 pts, RNH 106 pts. RNH was 17 for most of the season while Vey and Johnson were 19 and 20 respectively for most of the season, 2-3 years of development at that age makes a world of difference.

edit: having said that he has been pretty consistent in his past 2 seasons so maybe im being a little quick in wirting him off.

He's real good. Size is his only knock, but he plays bigger than his size. He's more quick than fast and he's very intelligent. He played with Eberle, and they had sick chemistry. Many thought his numbers were a product of that chem, however, he's proven that not to be the case. If anything, his ability to gel with a player of Eberle's caliber and skillset bodes well for him to potentially play a top-6 if he makes it.

He doesn't have a hard shot, but its effective. He's a slick passer, so expect more A than G, though. Overall, he's a prospect to own in deeper leagues like the one in my sig, not smaller ones like 10 Team.

i get to see him play here in Regina, and hes a decent player for sure. i'd say hes one step behind of Eberle at the same points in thier careers with the Pats. hes been snubbed by the Team Canada for the junior squad a couple of times now so that should tell you where he stands as far as the rest of the kids go. hes small, but hey so is Eberle, Weal just doesnt have the next level though IMO. He will make teh NHL, but i wouldnt expect the same results as Ebs.

In reading some of these breakdowns I would say somewhat similar to Matt Calvert?

Age is a good point. Weal's b-day is Apr 15th. In the '08/'09 season, Eberle was 18y/o and potted 74pts in 61gp. Weal was 16y/o and was the 2nd leading scorer with 70pts in 65gp (Ebs at 16 y/o: 55pts in 66gp)
The following year, when he was 19, Ebs went stupid with 106pts (50G, 56A) in 57gp. Weal (17 y/o) was the 2nd leading scorer again with 102pts in 72gp.

Without Ebs, Weal (18y/o) potted 96pts in 72gp. The closest guys to him on the team had 52pts in 70 and 72gp. Weal was out last year, only 7gp, but he's 19 this year. Granted, he isn't destroying it like Eberle (57gp: 50G, 56A... 106pts), but 51gp: 30G, 53A... 83pts) is nothing to sneeze at. He would have to have 4pt games to catch Eberle by 57gp. That won't happen, but if he keeps his current pace from the past 25 gp, he'll be at 95pts, which isn't horribly off. Size is definitely his concern, but not the end all. He has hustle to his game, so he surely has a shot.

Eberle: 5'10" 174lbs
Weal: 5'8" 158lbs

No question there's a difference. Because of his size, one could argue that what he is doing at the same age is more impressive in juniors than what Ebs did.

For what it's worth, hockeysfuture has him listed at 5'9", 165lbs. Either way, I'd like to see what he could do with more AHL action (only 7 games last year) before writing him off, especially if he packs on some weight.

I'm also coming across 5'9" 173lbs, too.
