Default 12/06/11 Studs & Duds

It's getting late so I'll do 2/2 for the early games and in the morning I'll do one of each for the 10PM games.

STUDS

Brodeur shines... finally

Martin Brodeur had a strong night stopping 29 of 31 shots in a 3-2 overtime win over the Toronto Maple Leafs. These numbers are not astronomical but they are important considering Brodeur's blunders of late. On the night his GAA is 1.91 and his save percentage is .935.

Should I drop E. Staal?

NO!!! Tonight was an example why. The roto stud was at his very best with two goals, an assist, eight shots and 15/27 on faceoffs. Staal now has seven points in his last five games which is a sign that he is turning things around.

Honourable mentions (rapid fire)

David Clarkson had two goals, six shots and four hits.
Alexei Emelin had his first NHL point (assist) along with nine hits.
Ondrej Pavelec stopped 39 of 40 for the win over Boston.
Brendan Morrison had two goals and two assists while finishing plus-3.

DUDS

Garon-teed defeat

The Lightning continue their up-and-down season and their goaltending inconsistency continued as well. Tonight it was Mathieu Garon's turn to lay an egg. He stopped 29 of 34 (.853) in a 5-1 loss to the New York Islanders. Your turn, Dwayne Roloson (I guess).

Going back-Ward-s

The last thing the Hurricanes needed was another loss. The last thing owners of Cam Ward needed was another dud. Cam Ward delivered on both. He stopped 26 of 32 and was pulled from the crease. A pair of late goals handed the loss to rookie Mike Murphy but the GAA of 7.06 and the save percentage of .812 absolutely stink.

Dis-honourable mentions (rapid fire)

Joe Corvo was a team-worst minus-2 in 14 minutes (2-1 loss).
Vincent Lecavalier was pointless and minus-2.

No Honorable Mention to Daniel Sedin with his 3 even-strenght goal?

They were definitely a real-life dud and I mentioned that in my post-game report in the Habs thread but they still scored twice which is better than some other teams tonight.

Right back at you with the morning edition covering the late games to make sure our most eager readers come home happy...

STUDS

Hackett strong in NHL debut

Matt Hackett replaced Josh Harding about a minute into the game. To make matters worse, the Sharks had already beaten Harding so Hackett was getting his first big-league action down a goal. That didn't matter as Hackett shut the door the rest of the way. The Wild would respond with two goals later in the first period and hung on for a 2-1 victory. Hackett does not get the shutout because he did not play the full game but he gets credit for not allowing any goals and picking up the W.

Sedin triplets

The Sedin twins combined for three goals in this game. Each goal was scored by Daniel and assisted by Henrik. These two are a model of consistency on offence and are once again among the elite scorers of the NHL.

Honourable mentions

Jonas Hiller stopped 37 of 39 (.949) in a 3-2 win over the Kings.
Bobby Ryan scored twice and added a plus-2 rating, three shots and two hits.

DUDS

Avalanche of suck

The duds will primarily be under one title because the Colorado Avalanche were terrible. They lost 6-0 to Vancouver. They couldn't even score on a cold Cory Schneider subbing in for an injured Roberto Luongo (more on that later).

For starters, Semyon Varlamov had a terrible night for his fantasy owners. He allowed six goals on 21 shots (.714) which puts his nightly GAA at around 7.25. In H2H that might mean losing two categories for the week.

Along with Varlamov's struggles were a few terrible outcomes in the plus-minus department. Jan Hejda, Milan Hejduk and Shane O'Brien finished minus-2, Matt Duchene and Ryan O'Reilly finished minus-3 and Ryan O'Byrne finished minus-4.

Dis-honourable mention

This is more of a personal thing than an actual dud but I'm going to mention Roberto Luongo here. In terms of ups-and-downs, this guy puts busy elevators to shame. Luongo has played well since returning from his recent injury and tonight appeared he was heading for a shutout. Unfortunately he took a puck to the throat and left the game. He still picked up the win but his frustrated fantasy owners are feeling pain after seeing his night end at 13 saves while not getting credit for the shutout.
