Default 11/19/11 – Studs & Duds

STUDS

Be like Mike

Another outstanding performance for the Coyotes Mike Smith. He was excellent in stopping 43 of 45 shots in Phoenix’s 4-2 victory over the Sabres, and it was the second straight game in which he faced over 40 shots, yet conceded just two goals. His average save percentage over his last four games is .964.

Chris Kelly?!?!

I know, I’m as surprised as you are. Kelly had two goals and an assist, while adding two PIM, four shots, and two hits. He was also a plus-3 and won eight of 13 face-offs. You can only hope to contain him.

Joffrey Lupul

Just feasted on the struggling Caps with a goal and three assists. He added six shots on net and was a plus-2.

Honourable Mention

Cal Clutterbuck – Had seven shots and 6 hits, while adding an assist and two PIM in just over 18 minutes of action.

Ryan Suter – Two assists, four shots, four PIM, and two blocks for the Predators D man.

Jonas Gustavsson – Was excellent in stopping 40 of 41 shots in his first action in ten days.

Oil Attack – A hat-trick for Taylor Hall, five assists for RNH. Four points each for Jordan Eberle and Tom Gilbert. The future is now.

DUDS

Off the Mark

I’m sure Tiger Woods wouldn’t mind Mark Streit’s stat line right about now, but unfortunately for Streit, this isn’t golf. Streit was a minus-5 and registered just a single shot in the Bruins beatdown of the Islanders.

Caps Discipline

The Leafs were three for four on the power play and that was due to Washington taking some bonehead penalties. Semin was called for diving early in the game, and Backstrom took an unsportsmanlike after being called for cross-checking in the second, giving the Leafs a four minute power play which effectively ended the Capitals hopes in this one.

Horrible Hawks

Chicago played as bad as my Movember moustache looks, and believe me that’s bad. I thought it was 1986 for a second the way the Oilers were bulging the twine. Neither Emery or Crawford could make a save, and only four Blackhawks skaters were not a minus on the night.

Dishonourable Mention

Drew Stafford – Held pointless and was a minus-3 on the night.

Martin Biron – Not a great effort giving up four goals on 31 shots. A couple were from tough angles as well.

Duncan Keith – No points, one shot and a minus-4.

Isles Goaltending – Rick DiPietro and Anders Nilsson gave up a three goals each on a combined 30 shots. Nilsson gets a bit of a reprieve since it was his first NHL action.

Smith has been spectacular for sure - Mr. Price is not far behind and might warrant a 2nd Degree HM for his second shutout in a row and a .961 SV% over his last 4 games.

This to me was the 1STUD of the night... Just show's how a patient rebuild like the one in Edmonton will pay off. This team will dominate the West in another couple years.

Theo Peckham deserves a mention too. +5 and 19 PIM. I'm sure his owners were excited from his statline from last night.

Indeed. His +5 exactly negated Streit's -5. Damn Streit.

Not that it matters, but a lot of huge fantasy performances last night not mentioned here:

Byfuglien: 1G 2A 3PPP
Jeff Petry: 3A +5
Peckham: +5 19 PIM
Ladd, Little, a few others jets, Matt Read, etc..

In general Oilers were pretty much top 3 studs and another 2-3 HM.
