Default 10/17/11 - Studs & Duds

Studs

3) Jets Flying High - The new Winnipeg Jets recorded their first win of the season thanks to a fantastic performance by Ondrej Pavelec and to a lesser extent, Alex Burmistrov. Pavelec made 32 saves for a .941 save percentage and Burmistrov looked great on the ice tonight as he chipped in 2 assist and finished with a +2 rating.

2) Ducks > Sharks? - Well if you ever asked me who would win in a fight between a Duck and a Shark, I think I'd have to side with the Shark. However, the Anaheim Ducks won against the Sharks for the second time this season, largely as a result of a fantastic outing by Ellis and Selanne. Ellis stopped 41 shots for a .953 save percentage and Selanne picked up where he left off last season, notching 2 goals.

1) Flying High - Stephen Weiss, Brian Campbell, and Kris Versteeg all set or tied their record for most points in one night, posting 4 a piece. Campbell had 4 assists, 4 powerplay points, 1 blocked shot, 1 hit, and finished with a -1 rating. Versteeg had 2 goals, 2 assists, 3 powerplay points, 4 shots, 2 hits, and finished with a +1 rating. Lastly, Weiss chipped in with 2 goals, 2 assists, 3 powerplay points, 6 shots, 1 hit, and 14 face-off wins.

Duds

3) Patric Hornqvist - This guy has not had a good season thus far and it continued tonight. He had a team-worst rating of -2 in a mere 10 minutes of ice time; he didn't help out in peripheral categories either, posting a meager 1 shot.

2) Tampa's Not-So-Potent Special Teams - The Lightning's penalty kill allowed the Panthers powerplay to cash in on 4/8 opportunities for a huge 50% conversion rate. Their powerplay wasn't so great either, allowing a shorthanded goal.

1) Lightning... but where's the Thunder? - The Lightning dropped yet another game tonight, giving them a record of 1-3-2. Roloson put up another brutal game, allowing 7 goals and putting up and awful .788 save percentage. Stamkos, Lecavalier and St. Louis combined for 2 points but in a high scoring game such as this and against a team like Florida, it simply isn't enough.

Situations to Watch

Dustin Byfuglien - Big Buff finished with a negative rating yet again tonight. He's a -3 on the year and there's rumblings he may be moved back to forward which should frighten owners (myself included).

Joe Pavelski - This kid has looked amazing every game for the Sharks this year. While he hasn't blown up the score sheet he has been creating chances constantly and this should only improve once the Marleau-Thornton-Pavelski line starts to gel. He also posted 6 shots tonight.

Brett MacLean - MacLean has seen his ice time decrease steadily every game and was down to a mere 5 minutes tonight. Could he be wearing out his welcome already?

Oh come on! No mention of Ryan Smyth scoring a very classy GAME WINNING GOAL on the oh so very important Ryan Smyth Bobble Head night? I am very disappointed!

Or how the Preds could only muster a measly 12 shots on goal?

As an oilers fan I'd love to plug that stuff in there. However, the panthers were a lock for stud status and I felt the jets first won and ellis/selannes performance edged it out.

Actually, St Louis and Stamkos combined for 1 point. St Louis posted 8 shots and a sweet total of zero points. I'm wondering if MAB and St Louis switched jerseys last night, possible?
