I go briefly through all Finnish NHL prospects and what they have done in the first ten rounds in SM-liiga.
C Mikael Granlund, HIFK / Minnesota - 8 GP, 4+10=14, 2 PIM, 33 SOG Granlund has been doing just what everyone expected him to do: dominate. He will make an immediate effect in Wild's attack next year, and at least for now it seems that he'll be top six right from the start. RW Teemu Pulkkinen, Jokerit / Detroit - 8 GP, 3+5=8, 2 PIM, 30 SOG Although Pulkkinen hasn't been as impressive as Granlund, he's still tied in the scoring lead in the top team of SM-liiga this season. Pulkkinen's spot in Red Wings roster is still a few years away, partly because he's not NHL ready, partly because of Red Wings' bad habit to put their prospects to AHL for few years. LW Julius Junttila, Karpat / undrafed - 10 GP, 2+4=6, 2 PIM, 33 SOG Junttila has gone undrafted for two drafts now, but he's still considered as one of the biggest talents in Finnish hockey. He's extremely skilled, and could well find himself in the NHL some day. RW Joel Armia, Assat / Buffalo - 10 GP, 1+4=5, 10 PIM, 47 SOG Joel Armia has been a bit of a disappointment in the first rounds. He has only scored one goal, and seems to be going through quite bad sophomore jinx. Buffalo fans and fantasy owners should not be worried though, he will return to his level when the season progresses. D Sami Vatanen, JYP / Anaheim - 10 GP, 1+4=5, 12 PIM, 61 SOG JYP has had very bad start to this season, and Vatanen has also struggled. In the last few games he's been very good though, and his PPG will probably rise from current 0.5 to closer to 1. C Miikka Salomaki, Karpat / Nashville - 7 GP, 3+1=4, 6 PIM, 23 SOG Salomaki had a great preseason and also started the season flying. His production has slowed a bit since, but he's playing quite lot and should develop to a great 2nd/3rd line power forward to the NHL. D Rasmus Ristolainen, TPS / draft eligible 2013 - 9 GP, 2+2=4, 29 PIM, 25 SOG Ristolainen is born October 1994 and isn't draft eligible until 2013. As for now it seems that he'll be a sure top 10 pick in that draft, as he's playing 20min/game in men's league and producing good stats as well - when he's 16! C Aleksander Barkov jr., Tappara / draft eligible 2014 - 4 GP, 2+1=3, 0 PIM, 5 SOG This kid has been phenomenal so far. He's born 1995 and he will get drafted in 2014, but even now he looks like a complete package. He has great shot, he sees the ice well and as a big player (6'2" / 194 lbs - and he has just turned 16!) also protects the puck nicely. D Teemu Eronen, Jokerit / St. Louis - 5 GP, 1+2=3, 0 PIM, 15 SOG Eronen's story is just the same that I wrote about him in the spring: he's great in the offense but not that good in the defence. He still has to gather more power and size to make it to the big league. LW Toni Rajala, Ilves / Edmonton - 7 GP, 1+2=3, 4 PIM, 34 SOG Rajala was cut from Edmonton's camp and came back to Ilves. From the seven games he has played Ilves has lost six, but Rajala has been one of the good guys of the team. C/RW Markus Granlund, HIFK / Calgary - 5 GP, 0+3=3, 0 PIM, 17 SOG "The Little Granlund" was put next to his brother in the first line of HIFK and he hasn't disappointed. It was speculated if the 2nd round pick was too early for him, but at least for now everything looks good. RW Joonas Donskoi, Karpat / Florida - 10 GP, 1+0=1, 4 PIM, 17 SOG Donskoi has been a big disappointment. He was expected to be one of the go-to guys in the Karpat team, but he has only scored one goal so far. It's only his second full season in the men's league though. D Jyrki Jokipakka, Ilves / Dallas - 7 GP, 1+0=1, 2 PIM, 12 SOG Last season Jokipakka led Ilves team in plusminus and time on ice minutes, but because of the arrivals of former NHLer Ville Koistinen and veteran D-man Martti Jarventie and his poor performance in the preseason he started the season in Mestis, the second-tier league in Finland. He has played seven games in SM-liiga now, but as the team he plays for, Jokipakka hasn't impressed in any way. G Niko Hovinen, Pelicans / Philadelphia - 6-2-1, SV% 0.930, GAA 1.81 Hovinen has been just what he was supposed to be - one of the best goalies in the league. He said in an interview before the season that he aims to be the next Antti Niemi, and he's going to be one too, if he continues to play in this level.

JYP - KalPa: 2 on goal Karpat - JYP: 6 on goal, 1 blocked, 2 missed JYP - Blues: 5 on goal, 2 missed JYP - Pelicans: 5 on goal, 3 missed Blues - JYP: 2 on goal, 2 missed Lukko - JYP: 1 on goal, 2 missed JYP - Assat: 7 on goal, 2 blocked, 2 missed HIFK - JYP: 2 blocked, 2 missed JYP - SaiPa: 6 on goal, 2 missed JYP - Karpat: 1 goal, 3 on goal, 1 missed So in total: 38 on goal (incl. 1 goal), 5 blocked, 18 missed. But I guess 38 SOG in 10 games is not bad for a D-man anyhow

Great to see you back on the boards Noma for your insight into Finnish prospects. There is a huge wave of Finnish talent emerging into the NHL over the next few years.
I look forward to seeing Rasmus (2013) develop and definitely want to read/see more on Sasha Barkov. As you stated, he looks like the total package. I do have one thing to pick at and it's just because I didn't like the bolded statement below on Teemu P..... Quote:
Thanks for the insight. Keep us posted Noma. |
