Default 9/29/11 - Studs & Duds

Studs & Duds
September 29th

Studs

3) The Unusual Suspects

While Brunnstrom is having a great preseason adding two goals (one PPG), plus-1, three SOG, two hits, and two take aways - I would like to shift some focus to Cory Emmerton.

Emmerton, selected in the 2nd round by Detroit in 2006, looked good last night. Two assists, plus-two, three SOG, one hit and two takeaways. He is battling for a 4th line spot. If Detroit sends him down, he is at risk to be claimed as Cory is no longer safe through waivers.

Colin Wilson also recorded his fifth point in four preseason games last night.

2) Kanes are able!

E. Kane - two third period goals with one being a PPG. Evander also joins the nine SOG club and finished the game with six hits. Not too shabby.

However all eyes were on centerman Patrick Kane last night, with Brunette and Hossa on the wings. Guess what? He opened the scoring and the coach liked what he seen.
"I thought they looked (good) together," he said of the Kane-Hossa pairing.

"They had some real nice plays, and there's some real excitement among the two of them, being on a regular shift together. I think their anticipation, their threat off the rush, threat off zone plays ... maybe a little cute sometimes, but I think there's a lot of plays among them that eventually will be cashing in."

Patrick finished the night with one PPG, one PPA, two PIM, five SOG and an impressive 66.7 FO% (8/4)

1) Royal Flush II

The good one this time! The Kings dominated the score sheet over the Avs last night, headlined by a hat trick from Anze and a 27 save shut out by Quick.

Check out these stat lines :
Kopitar - three goals (two PPG), plus-two, five SOG
Jack Johnson - three assists (two PPA), plus-two, three SOG
Justin Williams - one PPG, one assist, plus-one, six SOG

Even try-out Trent Hunter got in on the action with two assists, plus-two, one SOG.

However give some credit to prospect Voynov who recorded one goal, one PPA, plus-two, two SOG, two blocked shots and two hits.

Duds

3) More IR

Nazem Kadri is expected to miss 3-4 weeks with a knee strain. That's a big blow to start the season for Kadri. Also, Viktor Stalberg also left in the first period with a leg injury. Quenneville mentioned that it did not look good. Stalberg had a couple of goals a few night ago. Maybe Pirri can squeeze in the lineup for opening night!

2) Come again?

Beyond Brendan Smith's inevitable suspension, I was reading this morning that the Wings may put him on waivers. If that is the case, what a double whammy for Smith. Stay tuned.

1) Buried in Snow

Semyon Varlamov allowed four goals on 14 shots in the second period. The Avs power play was pretty darn effective tonight as well, going 0 for 6! Oh and Jay McClement took five shots on goal... they all missed the net.

Quick hits

Quote of the night :"I saw the lineup they dressed and I didn't know it was opening night," Babcock said. Just so happens that The Blackhawks' lineup was pretty much a full regular season roster, while the Wings went with a bunch with prospects and depth players.

Hiller owners must be feeling a tad more confident : "If he continues to be symptom free as he has shown us, then there's no reason to forget what happened and go forward," Anaheim coach Randy Carlyle said.

and Scheifele added another assist to his preseason totals.

Other stat lines :

Brandon Smith - two assists (one PPA), ten PIM, two hits
Duncan Keith - three assists (two PPA), plus-one, two SOG, one blocked shot

Probably more speculation than anything but this was retweeted by Damian Cox -

So, if pattern holds, DET's Brendan Smith will get suspended for Ben Smith hit, and Wings will put him on waivers. Big punishment for team."

Not that I seek out speculation, but I though this one was Dud-like.

Update on Stalberg - three weeks / injured leg.

Yeah, and their D do seem full -

Lidstrom - White
Kronwall - Stuart
Ericsson - Kindl
Commodore - Smith

Sending Smith down, being exempt, may just be a numbers game.

He would be claimed by multiple teams if he was waived. Can exempt players be waived if the team wants for non-reassignment purposes?

As for as I know, entry level contract players (such as Brendan Smith) can be sent and brought up waiver free. Meaning Detroit will not lose him by sending him to the AHL.

ELC-system is completely different from waiver system. ELC players can be waiver eligible too (see Zach Hamill, John Tavares and Matt Duchene as examples).

But I don't know if a team can waive a player who is otherwise waiver exempt.
