Welcome to Winnipeg, Mark Scheifele!

I'm not sure what to think here because this pick was a huge gamble, but I'm supporting Cheveldayoff and the rest of the crews decision. To be honest, I didn't know much about Scheifele, but after some research, I can try and compare him with last years draft pick, Alexander Burmistrov. Both played for the Barrie Colts of the OHL, and both played only one season with the team (maybe Scheifele goes back this season though).

Burmistrov was drafted 8th overall last year, and Scheifele drafted 7th this year. Burmy played in 62 games, recorded 22 goals, and 43 assists, for a total of 65 points, and finished a +32. Scheifele played in 66 games, scored 22 goals, and dished 53 assists, for a total of 75 points, but was a -22. Now I don't follow how well the teams are in the OHL, but from what I've heard, the Colts were a very bad team and Scheifele had no one to play with but still had a good year.

I got to think that the management knows what they're doing and see something that they really like with Scheifele. I don't think Scheifele will make the team this year, however. The best bet might just be to keep him in the juniors.

Remaining Draft Picks:

Rd. Pick Position/Player
1 8 - C - Mark Scheifele
3 67
4 97
4 108
5 133
5 149
6 157
7 187
7 194

I also heard a rumor that Dale Hawerchuk had a hand in this selection of Mark Scheifele. I have a very good source here in Winnipeg telling me that Hawerchuk and Cheveldayoff have had a few meetings the past few weeks reguarding the draft.

Ducky lives strong in Winnipeg!!!

Hawerchuk on Schiefele from WFP (via illegalcurve)

...snip

"It's very exciting for one of my guys, too."
Scheifele fits the profile of what the new Jets need -- scoring -- according to the Jets legend and Hockey Hall of Famer who tallied 1,409 points in his career.
"You look at this draft and there are some very good defencemen," he said. "You look around the league and for big centremen who can play and put up points, (Ryan) Strome (who went fifth to the Islanders) and Scheifele were your guys in this draft.
"Once Strome went, it was, 'Oh boy, I think the next in his class might be Scheifele.' He's a great kid, great size, great hands, and he loves the game to death.
"When you have kids like that, they'll be successful. They just find a way."

Scheifele, Hawerchuk said, got a baptism with the big guns of the OHL this past season, when he put up 75 points as a junior rookie.
The Colts, who struggled all year long and lost 49 games, thought they might get centres Kyle Clifford back from L.A. and Alexandre Burmistrov back from Atlanta last fall. But neither returned.
"It was a great opportunity," Hawerchuk said. "He was the top guy all year long. But he had to play against 19- and 20-year-olds all year long, plus the other team's top two defencemen. And he put those kinds of numbers up at 17, a pretty good feat."
The hype and attention that may await Scheifele in Winnipeg will be no issue for the Kitchener, Ont., native, Hawerchuk said.
"Oh yeah, he's a great kid," he said. "Down-to-earth solid kid. He's just worried about playing hockey. That's the greatest thing about being 18.
"You're just so focused on playing and making your mark."
And he hopes the Jets will see the wisdom in another year of junior for their first first-round pick.
"I'd think one more year," Hawerchuk said. "Burmy, I'd have loved to have had him one more year and send them back a 120-point man. Same with Scheif. I'd like to see him really dominate. You take a guy at seven, you want him dominating junior hockey then going to the NHL, in my mind."

I was fully expection Couturier, but, like someone who had replied to my comment on Illegalcurve, The Isles, OTTAWA (surprisingly), and Jets all must've passed on Couturier for the same unknown reason.

This article gets me pumped for drafting this kid but I'm pretty sure we could've traded to 10 to get him either way.

Thumbs up

Hey guys,
Live here in barrie and a Colts season ticket holder.
Comparing Burmistrov to Schieffle is a tough comparison.
Burmistrov played on a team with elite talent, team went from first to worst in the OHL.
Schieffle was the best of a bad bunch. He has talent, but really the Colts were decimated
last year with guys not coming back.ie Burmistrov, Clifford and the rest.
I think if memory serves me corrrect 6 colts played at least 1 game in the NHL last year.
So like many poor teams, look for someone to shine, it was an abysmal year.
And it was Schieffle, i would rather have Burmistrov, based on explosive potential.
Schieeffle had some games where he got his clock cleaned with some fancy moves at the Blue line and in front of the net at the start of the year, trying to be a one man team.
He has talent, but was surprised he got taken so high.
Then again I was surprised Clifford went as high as he did last year as well, and never came back.
Guess that is why I do what I do and am not a scout.
I wish him the best, but see him coming back to the Colts next year, it would make a world of difference for him being the man on a growing young team.
But like I said comparing him to Burmistrovs stats is unfair with the different roles and ice team they had.
Atlanta sports fan, keep up the good work, love reading your threads and your passion shows. Very refreshing.
Thanks and Good Luck

It would have been nice if they could have traded down to squeeze into the 2nd round somewhere... Oh well, hopefully Scheifele pans out. I read that article, too, and was left hopeful.

wpggrown,
Totally agree with your opinion of trading down, but you know how it is if you like it you better get it when it is in front of you.
Thanks for digging up that article
