League configuration - Fantasy Sports Forums

Hi guys,

I\'m a new poster, but read a lot since February.

We started a \"9 Teams Yahoo Fantasy Points Non-Keeper\" league last year with the following settings:

2C, 2LW, 2RW, 4D, 2G, 4BN
G (25), A (25), +/- (10), PIM (3), PPP (10), SHP (20), GWG (20), SOG (2), W (50), GA (-15), SV (2), SHO (50)

We\'re currenlty looking at changing our league configuration for next year and I just want your ideas on this. We already talked about removing the +/- (there was a really large gap within our group) and probably removing the PIM as most of them don\'t care about it. We might also want to change some of pts given to balance the thing a little bit (i.e. our ratio GA/SV was around 7 and we\'re looking to put it at around 10). It think the main goal in doing this is to really keep it a pts only configuration.

We\'ve also thought about introducing keepers at the end of next year. How many players do you suggest? We\'ve already talked about either 5 (one for each position) or 3 (no more then 1 for any position).

I\'m sure you guys have more experience then me so I really think you can help us on this one.

Welcome Chicleteur,
I agree that +/- should be removed. It really only works if the pool is a standard rotisserie format (i.e. 10 pts in a category for 1st, 1 point in a category for 10th if there are 10 teams).
So either change your format to roto-style, or remove that stat.

As for keepers - I would suggest two per position. I\'m a believer that a league is not a keeper league if you\'re only keeping three or four guys. Hell - you may as well just re-draft them!

If you do increase your keepers, naturally you will need to expand your roster to 3-3-3-4-2 and 5+ on the bench.

Thanks Dobber for the advices! Totally agree with you on the +/-. We\'re not H2H or rotisserie fans so that\'s why we think it should be removed. I guess you think the same about the PIM.

As for the keepers, a lot of GM are afraid that if you keep a bigger bunch of players, the same people will win each year. What\'s your experience on this? However, I really like this idea of 2 keeper by position with a bigger team size...

I find that with less keepers, comes the potential for dumber trades. If I\'m only allowed to protect 6 guys, and I\'m rebuilding for next year - I will trade all my usable assets from my 7th best player down for better keepers or high draft picks to guys hoping to win now.

Some pools have a time limit on long you can keep any one player (say 3 years?). Others use a salary cap to limit your talent - the theory being you can\'t afford to stack your team too much, like the NHL.

I think you pointed out a good point The Comish. I guess it comes down to full keeper or not.

I also really like the time limit. This might cover the fear of somebody stacking his team almost forever.

I\'ve another question. How do you find our pts system. I think our comish took the default, but I\'m not sure.

I like your point system as its similar to what I use in my keeper league with some slight differences -its pretty much based on the sporting news game .

I like using +/- though as it can give some value to d-men who otherwise wouldnt have as much due to their offensive production shortcomings .I suppose that means more if the league is deep -but seeing as yours is only 9 teams I guess there is probably enough offensive d-men to go around so that its not required to dig deep for those good +/- and high pim type depth guys.

I also noticed you dont award points for a goaltender OT or Shootout loss .Giving them +25 could help your goalie numbers

I would be interested to see your pts system*. As for the OT or Shootout loss, these are really interesting categories, but I don\'t think they are available in Yahoo.

if you guys are simply using straight fantasy points to determine your standings and not h2h or roto you could probably find a few stat servers other than yahoo that would have a better selection of stat categories .

some are free , some are just the cost of a beer or two per poolie
