Off that list keep Kopitar and Backstrom over Rafalski and Carlson if that's an option...I'd also keep Niemi over Kipper as I feel SJ will resign him again as long as he has a solid enough regular and post season for them which I expect him to...if were jsut talking Shattenkirk and Karlsson i'd keep Shattenkirk over 38 year old rafalski, but would be inclined to hold on to Carlson simply because of Ottawa's impotent offense

Shats over Rafalski and yes I agree with MT319 to stay with Carlson, Budreau is going to get fired soon and the team is going to turn it on!!

I agree, I'd take both over Rafalski!

I'm a little surprised about Shatts getting so much love, I thought Karlsson was the better guy here... Both are very talented, I think Karlsson has the edge talent wise but I guess Shatts has the better team in front of him!

In the end, you can't really go wrong with either one of them!

I agree with Mox.

Note however that there will be some changes in Ottawa this year. I think the change will benefit Karlsson. So if your looking long term something to think about.

Either way both are good choices.

For me, it's easily Doughty, Green, Karlsson, Carlson, what a killer top 4 D. I'm surprised people are going with Shattenkirk over Karlsson.

Look at the talent Shattenkirk has infront of him vs. what Karlsson has to work with in OTT...I'm definitely not averse however to taking Karlsson over Carlson as well as Karlsson is the superior talent of the two but Carlson is a solid talent in his own right plus on WSH which gives him better overall upside

Sorry but in no way is Karlsson a better hockey player than Carlson. Karlsson been better offensively (5 pts better) but is atrocious defensively much of the time. Carlson has also been playing 2nd PP time, as well as with a team that has lost 8 straight but he is plus 5. While Karlsson is a minus 5 and has been handed the top PP mins.

His defense is not atrocious. It was at the beginning of the season, but he has improved immensely and is now the team's best d-man by a mile. Carlson might play better D but I don't think he's a better player...it's also laughable that you bring up +/-, as no doubt mostly every Capitals player is in the "+" and mostly every Senator is in the "-". It's a team stat.

I'd take Karlsson over Carlson and Shattenkirk, all bias aside. He is just a better defenseman offensively from what I've seen. I like Shattenkirk as a close second.
