Default Interesting question to all!!

Hello folks,

Me and my Buddy are trying to instore an \"utility player\" category in our lifetime pool. It\'s a player that can be considered both FOR and DEF. Examples Burns, Streit and reaching, Fedorov.

Can you guys tell us how to find out how many games a player played per position in a NHL year? Is it possible to get those stats? We are considering giving the \"utility player\" title to a player that played 25% of his games at the other position.

Or better yet, does someone have a better idea how to consider giving a player that title?

Thanks, Blue.

Not sure if this helps but...we permit a player to be kept at another position provided he shows up on 5 different weeks on the Hockey News\' depth charts.

Tough one...there aren\'t that many players that plays both position and that are actually recognized by the NHL or even Yahoo.

In my pool, the only extra position we have is the \"enforcer\" category where only PIM counts.

Impossible to track, because players play multi-positions within actual games.
Besides, you just named all the players I know that sometimes play up front and on defense...except Wade Belak\'s another...

Forget trying to track games played by position. Hockey stats are light years behind baseball. Too much work for very little benefit.

The issue of position eligibility comes up every now and then in the pools I manage because we require 6 defencemen each for our active rosters. When guys like Sergei Fedorov or Sami Kapanen play some games as defencemen during the year, I would still classify them as forwards. If I see a player that might play both positions, I will inform everyone before the draft, that the player will be considered a forward or defenceman for the entire year, regardless of the position he plays during the year.

I would call the position a \"rover\" and you can choose to use either a forward or defenceman.
