Default what is the \"magic number\" of games played...

How many games is a player allowed to play in and still be sent to the minors without having to clear waivers? Nine games, or ten?
I want to \"call up\" Price from my farm team, but i want to be 100% sure that he won\'t get sent down (as I wouldn\'t be able to send him back to my farm team once he\'s called up). I don\'t think that he\'ll ever be sent down... but I need to be sure.
Your help would be very much appreciated.

I\'d go ahead and call him up. He is the real deal and not going anywhere.

I know that I\'m being over-cautious... Price almost surely won\'t ever be going back down. However, I need to know for sure (!) before I call him up... I don\'t want to occupy a roster spot the entire season with someone who\'s not playing. Besides, I\'m currently solid in my league\'s win column, 1st in gaa, 1st in sv%, but next to last in SHO... so it\'s not like i\'m desperate for goalie help this year. I can afford to sit on the decision for a couple of games until he clears the \"magic number\"... I just need to know what that number is.

There is no magic number as to when they can\'t be sent down. There is an age limit to when they can be sent to the AHL or must be sent back to their junior team (which is 20 I believe). Carey is over that age so if anything he would be sent to the minors but he is playing too well for that in my opinion.

I think the magic number that you are thinking of is 10 games played before they must be sent down to either the AHL or their junior team or the first year of their rookie contract kicks in (if they play 9 or less games the first year is not considered to have been played and they stll have 3 years left on it) and they are considered to have played their first year of their rookie contract. He has played 9 so far so the next one puts him over the limit. Wait until after his next game played and then you can be pretty sure he will be in Montreal all year.

Hell, Carolina a few years ago sent Arturs Irbe to the Johnstown Chiefs in the ECHL even though he had a one way contract and had played very well for many years in the league. I believe they did it to try and get him to retire so they didn\'t have to pay him his millions. I believe he was the highest paid player to ever play in the ECHL.

To sum up you can never be certain they won\'t be sent down but the likelyhood is very low.

Hey Walter,

I think this will clear it up for you.

Players are exempt from Regular waivers for a certain number of years from signing their first SPC (or a certain number of NHL games, whichever comes first). The exemption length is based on their age when drafted. The details are in the table in Article 13.4 of the CBA.

13.4 Exempt Players. Players who meet the criteria set forth below are exempt from Regular and Re-Entry-Waivers:

Code:
GOALIES SKATERS

Years from Signing Years from
Signing NHL Games Signing NHL Games
Age –NHL Played –NHL Played

18 6 80 5 160
19 5 80 4 160
20 4 80 3 160
21 4 60 3 80
22 4 60 3 70
23 3 60 3 60
24 2 60 2 60
25+ 1 -- 1 --

The 5 yr / 4 yr exemption for 18 & 19 yo skaters is reduced to 3 years starting the first season that the player plays 11 or more NHL game. Similarly, the 6 yr / 5yr exemption for 18 & 19 yo goalies is reduced to 4 years starting the first season that the player plays 11 or more NHL games.

The formating above did not come out but Price basically for the next 4 years or 80 games played he does not have to clear waiver when being sent down or called up.

For the chart above the columns read like this:

1st: Age when drafted (18-25+)
2nd: Years exempt from signing for goalies (6-1)
3rd: Games played until no longer exempt for goalies (80-0)
4th: Years exempt from signing for skaters (5-1)
5th: Games played until no longer exempt for Skaters (160-0)

If anyone can tell me how to fix it so I can format the columns on this board I will be glad to do so, so that it is easy to read.

Thanks a lot Sin Bin!
\"10 games before the contract kicks in\"... I guess that is what I was looking for.
Very thorough Sin Bin... ++karma for you!!
