This may be a basic question, but I have never heard an answer about it.

I understand the rule about the goalie playing a puck inside the trapezoid, but I have never heard an explanation as to the reason why. Can anybody explain why it is worth a 2 minute penalty for a goalie to play the puck in that part of the ice? Somebody has told me that is slows the game down and it could be delay of game, but I think it is silly when the puck sits in the trapezoid and the goalie just sits there and has to wait for a Dman to come fetch it out for him. (Reminds me of the dog that is trapped in his yard by the invisible fence and when his bone or toy goes one foot outside the invisible fence, he can\'t go get it.)

It was a change made after the lockout to open up the game. Prior to the lockout, goalies often wandered into the corners to play the puck - this made players think twice before shooting it in. As such, they often chose to carry the puck in which resulted in the defensemen often stopping them, keeping the play in the neutral zone. The goalie was essentially a \'third defenseman\', which only served to reduce scoring.
Now teams shoot the puck in more, because they actually have a shot at retrieving it.
