Default Mason offer

Hi everyone,

I have been offered to trade Sakic, 6 round pick (50 point player)and 7 round pick (45 point player)for Mason and Wolski.

I am in keeper league. I have Bryzgalov and Budaj. So I need a goaltender.I have the other option to draft an available goaltender: Holmqvist, Labarbera or Bernier. I would like some advice If I should accept or reject this offer.

Thanx,

This is not an easy question. Mason really has no more value in a keeper than Budaj and Bryzgalov - and Cary Price is close in value as a keeper as well although not going to be ready for another year at least. There may be no future in Homqvist and Labarbera.

Sakic still has a lot of value as a keeper - although aging it seems he has at least two or three very productive years left in him. He could bring a very good trade later this season if someone is challenging for the championship. Wolski to my mind is a mid range keeper - not really high value but potential keeper nonetheless.

I guess I would wonder who you could draft to replace Sakic if you trade him and whether that replacement would match the value of Price. Addtionally I wonder who these 45 and 50 point players might be - guys that have no upside or guys who are just getting started and with a future - would they possibly be more valuable than Wolski.

After all that - I really think this is a very close deal in terms of value and not sure I know which is the best way to go. However I am a Sakic fan and do like the looks of Price and don\'t mind Budaj and Bryz in goal - so I probably wouldn\'t do this deal.

Sorry not much help here.

I defiantely think that you should hold onto sakic until at least later in the season. He is a PERFECT candidate to trade to a team in the hunt for elague championship. I believe that later in the season, you could fetch a young guy with upside, a prospect/pick for him, and set yourself up longterm.

Hello Gate \'et al\'

I would draft Bernier. He is having a very good camp in L.A. He could surprise everyone and get the job.

my thoughts.

Gate

I had a couple of other thoughts about this. With Theodore and Giggie pretty much missing training camp - the Budaj/Bryz equation looks pretty promising. If you get into the season and all is well with your boys I sure would think about Sakic and one of them for a high level goalie.

Your goalie assets aren\'t working the best for you right now in terms of trade value but if my instincts are right - that is going to change early in the season for the better. So even if Mason turns out to be a zinger I think now isn\'t the right time to make that move.

I am in the minority among most who offer opinions that I have read about Budaj. I think he is in for a good season with the Avs and I think he is not going to lose his job to Theodore (Ok, now you can guarantee that it will happen as I put the Lamplighter jinx on him! :evil

Seriously though, I think Budaj is going to have a clearly better season than either your other goalie, Bryzgalov, or the guy you are considering dealing for, Chris Mason. Sit tight with Budaj at this point and definitely don\'t move Sakic in this kind of trade. See how things are going early on and then if the goaltending is looking weak, you can move a forward for another netminder.

Just don\'t think Mason is the answer...

i\'m in agreement with the majority here. i say hold on to what you\'ve got and if you\'ve got the opportunity, draft bernier.

as lamplighter said previously, i think that budaj and colorado will surprise some this year and even though theodore may eat into some of his starts to justify his price tag, i don\'t see budaj losing the #1 job.

i\'m a fan of mason to have a nice year too, but if you\'ve got sakic and the opportunity to draft bernier, i say do that.

If I get to draft Bernier or Price. Which one of the two will have an impact this year (assuming that they make the team this year)? Which as more upside?

I think Bernier is closer for this year and I think LA is a juggernaut in the making so he would be my choice - Price may be the better goalie - but goalies also need a team in front of them. Montreal is a ways away from that happening - La is getting pretty close.
