Is this guy going to lead defensemen in scoring? 75 points possible? I am not sure that he will completely reach his potential until gonchar leaves... or is he actually that good?
Thanks |

Typo - I could fluff an answer, but the truth is I don\'t know. I do know the odds are he is going to be among the D offensive leaders for some time to come - based on his talent and Crosby/Malkin it will be hard for him not to.
There always seem to be durable high performing D guys in the league who hang on for a long time at that level - he might find it tough to crack - Lidstrom, Pronger, Gonchar, Visnovsky could all outstrip Whitney for 3 or 4 years to come.

He could possibly, but that would probably require an injury to Gonchar, or Gonchar being traded. Eventually, Gonchar will move on or become a free agent and the Pens will need a new PP quarterback/point man. I think they\'d like to get a right-handed shot to handle that duty, at least for the first unit because Crosby likes to set up along the half-wall on the PP. That said, I saw at least a dozen replays last year where Crosby spotted Whitney streaking in off the far point and Whitney got great scoring chances, many of which he converted or which led to goals.
There is a lot of hype about Kris Letang, who is a right-handed shot, joining the first power play unit. I don\'t think it will happen this year, but it will happen soon. Certainly, you can expect Whitney to get 60+ plus points in any full season he plays on the Penguins with Crosby. Does he have a 75-point season in him, well it\'s possible, but I wouldn\'t bet on it, at least not very much.

In a keeper league Whitney would be my top choice on the blueline but for this year only he wouldn\'t be. I don\'t think 75pts is likely. Not impossible mind you but that would probably mean Whitney finishing top scorer among D, something I\'m not ready to wager on just yet.

He\'s that good, and playing on Pittsburgh just makes him that much better. 70 pt defencemen for a long time to come.
