Im starting the 1st year of a keeper pool. Its a head to head pool with about every stat counting. The draft allows you to draft 17 year olds, which Tavares will be on the 20th of sept. The draft is the 23rd, When do I draft Tavares? I have no idea, like 2nd round, before a guy like kopitar, any input would be great, thanks

There is no doubt Tavares will go first overall in everyones pool in 2009. But if you are starting a fresh draft then I hoonestly dont htink I would take him until atleast the 3rd or 4th round. there are so many for sure NHL players out there that will get you atleast 80 points. You never know how he will turn out. In the drafts I have been in I took 2 good quality forwards and then a goalie. If you have the 5th pick over all I would say you might get Thornton, Gaborik and maybe someone like Nabokov or Miller. The Luongos and Brodeurs would be gone by now. Would you really consider taking Tavaras before these 3? Tough call! It might be worth the gamble. I guarantee if you don\'t take him in the first 3 rounds someone will.

also, you have to consider that he hasn\'t been drafted by an nhl team yet either... he\'s great and everything, but if he ends up in offensive hell (dallas, columbus, etc...) you might not get much of anything out of him for a couple of years after he breaks into the nhl. 5ish years (or maybe more depending where he goes and other conditions) is a loooonnng time to wait for a guy to start putting up points.

In the first year of a league, I\'d go with more proven talent in the early rounds. Why pass up proven 85+ point scorers for someone who may get you 100 points in 3 or 4 years if you\'re lucky? Even Crosby, as great as he\'s been and with lots of offensive support, hasn\'t been far ahead of the pack in his first two years. If Tavares does become THE MAN, it probably won\'t be till at least 5 years from now. So, I probably wouldn\'t take him till round 6 or so. But as someone else suggested, he\'ll be long gone by then, so I guess it depends how badly you want him.

I think he\'ll be the lemieux to crosby\'s gretzky...
My list of top skaters 17 and over in a keeper league would be, in order: Crosby Ovechkin Malkin Thornton Spezza Kovalchuk Heatley Hossa Lecavalier Tavares Top 10. If roster positions and/or goalies are to be considered, than he may fall to 20th on my list, but you gotta scoop this guy. In 2009-10, he\'ll be a 70-point guy minimum. By 2011-12 he\'ll be 125++ (won\'t know until we see him at this level, but the guy could wind up doing what Crosby is doing) Yes, you\'ll be giving up a top player to help out here and now by using a second round (or late first round) pick on him, but it would be so worth the wait and I\'m sure you can draft a decent team in the other rounds.

Wow, top 10 already. I won\'t argue with the master! Maybe I\'m out to lunch. I don\'t really have to worry about it, as Tavares won\'t be eligible in my league until he\'s drafted, at which point he\'s a no-brainer.
