hey guys we are running a keeper pool since couple years now and we were wondering about trading rule...(normal rules)
should Gm pay when they are trading player. Or trading should be free? Do we want to have a lot of trade or less trade possible....When we trade a player should we bring his total of points or not??? What are yours thoughts about it

Trading should be free. The idea is not without merit, but it creates extra work for the Commish.
First you need to find out what the majority of YOUR poolies want. Do they want lots of trades or only a few? I personally hate it when you see a team trade almost every player from his drafted roster. I like to try and mimic the NHL in some small way and you definitely don\'t see teams turning over their entire rosters on a yearly basis. As for bringing the points with them, if you\'re keeping track yourself, it\'s more work. Depends on your pool setup and rules. Ideally, I would prefer that they start fresh with their new teams.

Charging for trades, even if it\'s a token amount, could discourage trading - if for no other reason than the bureaucratic effort in keeping track of expenses by the GM and the Commissioner.
As for player points being transferable, it might not be a good idea either - in that scenario, the value of the player is dependent on what he\'s already done, rather than what he could do for you. Seems... counterintuitive.

I had a trade fee in one of my pools last year but have since changed it going into this year. It\'s much easier I find to just tack on 5-10 bucks to the entry fee at the start of the year than it is to collect money on the back end once people have won/lost.
It didn\'t seem to discourage trading too much, but in the end it was kind of unnecessary for the amount of money that ended up being collected.

We tried implementing a fee for trading a couple of years ago, and it really handicapped the amount of trading compared to previous years.
I like Lak\'s take on just adding x amount to the original fee. As for a player bringing his points with him, I personally do not like that idea. Pools are won and lost on a player(s) tanking or getting hot.. My 2 cents... |

Split scoring (player starts at zero with new team) Pros: -Seems more realistic Cons: -Kind of promotes early season trading. Late season trades won\'t have much impact. Trade deadline boring. -Alot more work for owners and commish. Trades become much more \"time sensitive\". As commish guys are going to want their trades updated quickly and regularly. If you have unlimited trading owners will be wanting to update their line-ups all the time replacing injured guys, moving guys back and forth from reserves, trying to maximize # of games played, etc. Replacement scoring (players bring pts with them.) Pros: -As commish less work. Enter data whenever. As owner you don\'t always have to be checking to see if you have the right guys activated. -Creates a \"stock market\" kind of pool. The players are like commodities with current values and future potential. -I like the idea that late in the season Top teams will be making deals with teams at the bottom. Trading off their young prospects for aging veterans with points. In effect the Top sell off their futures for the win this year while bottom teams rebuild. Very much how it happens in the NHL. (I can\'t see these types of deals happening with Split scoring. Who is going to want an aging veteran late in the season in a Keeper pool?) -Makes for an exciting Trade deadline. Cons: -Doesn\'t seem realistic. Some people don\'t seem to like the idea that you can just make a trade and jump up in the Standings Personally I like the idea of traded guys taking their points with them. It seems so much more simple and relaxed. I can remember using split scoring in a yearly pool and even though we could back date trades it always seemed like someone was complaining about the points not being right. With replacement scoring there\'s no confusion. I notice that Dobber\'s pool uses the Replacement style scoring. I guess it really comes down to what kind of pool you want to be running and how committed your friends are. Maybe some others with more experience could provide some insight. |

It really comes down to what you want in your pool. Split scoring is more realistic, but replacement encourages more trading, especially late in the season. If you want to mimic the NHL, less trading probably makes sense, but I find the enjoyment in a Keeper League is the trading, so I want to encourage it.
