Default Keeper\'s league dillemma(s)

Keeper\'s league. 15 GMs. 17 players. Top 3 C, 4 W and 3 D count for each of six \"about-5-week-long\" periods. 1 point per goal and per assist, that\'s it.

I have to protect 7 players (likely 2 C, 3 W and 2 D).

Given that I keep Thornton (C) and Semin (A), and taking out the \"unprotectable\" players out, it comes down to the following dilemmas for Center and winger (+ a question about Defense).

Center: Keep Langkow or P-M Bouchard? (Bouchard is listed as center in our pool...)

Winger: Keep 2/3 out of Karyia, Hejduk, Huselius. Kariya would have been an easy pick not that long ago, but now, in St.Louis? And that article written by Angus of March 13th (that I just can\'t forget since then) was SO convincing for Huselius (100-point?) and also for Hedjuk, that I am confused ... but now, with Huselius back with Keenan in Cgy...how bad of a news? (Note that I also have Sykora .. might explode with the Pens, but doubt it\'s worth betting that he will do better than 2 of those 3 guys... Any thoughts?)... (my last guy is Dustin Brown, but he is not there yet...

Defense: Guess it\'s obvious I should keep Redden and Campbell (how will Campbell do in the still-good-but-transformed Sabres?)... My \"problem\"? Having to drop Meszaros bugs me, I feel like I might regret it (20 years-old, never missed a game in 2 years, played over 20 minutes with a pretty good team, a not-that-bad 35 pts last year, former 1st-round draft pick by a team known for good scouting, etc...). I guess I see him better than he is (maybe because I used my 1st-round pick last year to be sure to have him...:-) ) ...

Thanks a lot

PS, if you wonder: I finished 3rd last year, so I am not in reconstruction mode ... but I still keep long-term in mind (Bouchard, Meszaros...)

PS I am aware of Dobber\'s predictions (and upside). FYI:
Bouchard (68 pts, 85 upside)
Langkow (74 pts, 80 upside)

Kariya(75 pts, 95 upside)
Hejduk (72 pts, 85 upside)
Huselius (69 pts, 90 upside)
Sykora (71pts, 75 upside)

Redden (47 pts, 70 upside)
Campbell( 51 pts, 65 upside)
Meszaros (42 pts, 55 upside)

Normally I\'d say to keep langkow over bouchard but just because of my next point I really think I\'d keep a Calgary player and I\'d take Husselius over Langkow and bouchard had a decent year and should only improve.

Saying that I would drop Husselius. He had a one good year and should thank Iggy and Tanguay a lot. Not saying he can\'t do it again but from your choices, he should be easy to say bye to.

Meszy I like him like you do but you already have Redden there and Campbell has been improving every year. So say bye to him.

Hmmm, these are some tough choices.

Center: For the forseeable future, since you want to be competitive now, I\'d go with Langkow. I can\'t see PM Bouchard matching or beating Langkow\'s totals so long as he\'s in Minnesota and Langkow continues to be Iginla\'s center. However, if either of those two things change, all bets are off. The other factor is age -- Bouchard is 7 years younger than Langkow. However, if your keeper league only protects 7 players, I think you\'ll find another guy to replace Langkow once his production declines.

Wing: I\'d take Kariya and Sykora. Plus-minus doesn\'t count in your league and Kariya should still score close to a PPG. Sykora is a bit more of a wildcard but he\'s in hockey heaven in Pittsburgh so I think he\'ll hit career highs this year. If you want to look longer-term I\'d go for Huselius. I\'m worried about him playing for Keenan but I think Keenan will be gone within a couple of years and/or Huselius will move on. He\'s got enough talent to succeed wherever he goes.

Defence: You gotta hang on to Redden because we all know what this guy can do as Ottawa\'s #1 PPQB. Last season, while terrible, was an anomaly. As for Campbell vs Meszaros -- I like Meszaros a lot. I can\'t help but think Redden will be gone from the Sens before long because they\'ll need all that cap room to keep Heatley and Spezza. In that case, Mez will be the man. The kid is only 21 and has played 2 solid seasons. I predict a breakout season for him this year and he\'ll only get better. However, it depends on how you think your fellow GM\'s think about him. If you think he\'ll slip to one of your picks in your seasonal draft, you can protect Campbell and let Mez slide. But I\'d get him back, if at all possible.

Good luck!

Welcome SagLac,

I would definitely choose Langkow over Bouchard.

Kariya/Hejduk, but Sykora is intriguing. If you\'re a risk taker, I guess Sykora would be an interesting keeper. Not me though, I\'ll keep the first two.

Redden/Campbell for sure. Meszaros is likely a couple years away from matching Campbell\'s point output.

Langkow is an easy choice for me.

Campbell is in a better place then Meszaros and has a bigger upside. He\'s and will be Buffalo QB for a while.

The harder choice is between Hedjuk and Sykora. They\'ll both new buddy on their line, but I think Sykora will put bigger number playing with Sid.

I\'ll weigh in too.

Langkow over Bouchard (Langkow\'s linemates are simply better right now).

Redden and Campbell also seem like easy picks to me for your D.

I\'ll go out on a limb with this though...I like Hejduk and Huselius in your other quandry. Kariya didn\'t look great to me last year and St. Louis shouldn\'t be setting any goal scoring records this year (even if they improve). I love Sykora, but he may not click with Sid (N. Ekman looked great with Thornton and did nothing in Pittsburgh so it\'s a gamble). I like Colorado\'s offense and I like the overall talent and potential of Huselius (Keenan or not).

I\'m gonna go against the majority and suggest you keep Bouchard over Langkow. Sure Langkow may get about 5 more points than Bouchard but the age difference (Langkow 31, Bouchard 23) in a keeper league more than makes up for that difference. There is also the fact that Bouchard has probably not peaked yet.

Kariya is an obvious choice. And I would go with Huselius over Hejduk or Sykora. He should put up similar numbers as last season and a Huselius goal assisted by Langkow won\'t hurt as much if you still own one of them .

I see Sykora doing really well by his standards, but still only 80ish points tops.

I like Langkow over Bouchard. Having Iginla on the line really gives him a boost and Bouchard is younger and still scores the points, but I feel like Langkow and Bouchard will do well under Keenan\'s system, whereas Bouchard is hindered by the defensive Minnesota system.

I\'d take Kariya/Hejduk. Hejduk\'s going to be on the first line of a great Colorado team, as Sakic/Smyth aren\'t slouch linemates. Huselius could do great or suffer under Keenan. I don\'t think Keenan will make as big of a difference as some people think, but the possibility is still there and I\'d rather go with the sure thing. Sure, Kariya\'s going to a defensive St. Louis but he\'ll be playing with Tkachuk and they\'ll be a bit younger of a team this year.

I\'d let Meszaros go, only because your other defensemen are doing so well and I think you\'d be more likely to pick him back up in the draft than the other guys. Campbell and Redden are pretty well-known and respected defensemen, whereas Meszaros is something that raises an eyebrow for the savvy GM. That being said, unless you feel like Meszaros ceiling is that much higher and that much closer, you\'re better off chancing it.
