I hope Florida keeps playing this guy. He's had some ugly games as of late but I think they are just growing pains on a Panthers team that is injured and playing bad. I'm going to write of the rest of the year for this team but I am wondering what others are thinking for next year. I read that the Panthers organization is one of the most promising in terms of prospects and am wondering what Markstrom projections for next year would be like. This is assuming they don't pull a bad move and trade for Luongo. I'm considering moving Niemi while he is having a great season and rolling with Rask and Markstrom next year.

I wouldn't buy into all the hype of Markstrom just yet. A goalie is only as good as the team in front of him -- and Florida just looks terrible most nights. I can't see them being much better next year. Which means Markstrom will get peppered most nights and have to stand on his head just to get decent stats. This year and next IMO.
How many young goalies just walk into the league and rip it up? Remember Price 4 years ago? Look how long it took for Dubnyk and Rask to get starting jobs. Look at all the hype with Schneider last year -- his been pretty average this year (lucky his on a solid team). Maybe I'm wrong but I try and stay away from Rookie Goalies and Defensemen. They almost always need a few years to develop.

Markstrom should be a fine #2 tender next year if you're rebuilding but he's a more suitable #3 in a 2 goalie league with Rask and Niemi in front of him

Now, to be fair - I havn't seen much of him playing the past 2 or 3 games. His defense is horrid, so he's going to get peppered until DeBoer plans a better game, or gets better D men. If there was any goalie who is NOT playing in the NHL now (including him) I'd take him first.

As a Markstrom owner, I'm starting to wonder whether it is in his best interest to be thrust into the spotlight like this night in and night out. We know that he's their goalie of the future and has tremendous skill and upside, but the last thing I would want is for him to regress in his development because his confidence is shattered.
He has very little defensive support around him - the Panthers have allowed 101 goals against, which is by far the most in the league (Islanders are second with 88 GA; by comparison, Ottawa has 54 GA, Chicago has 58 GA) - and this season is in all likelihood a write-off for Florida, meaning they'll probably be sellers at the trade deadline and become even thinner. So is it better that he be: a) in the NHL right now, but in a 1A/1B type of tandem (I don't think Clemmensen is able to handle a 1B assignment)? b) in the AHL? c) in the NHL and starting most of the Panthers games?

based on hype even with the rough start markstrom probably still carries pretty big name value
i would see if i could move him to a team hurting for goalies to try to upgrade my forward keepers if i were you i also wouldnt wait too long as each game that goes by hurts your leverage |

I too fear he is going to be shell shocked. He looked like he was fighting the puck badly last night. Florida's D is awful. Bad combo.
I can afford to sit on him for a while yet, to see how things pan out. That being said, Dale Tallon built a cup winner in Chicago and can hopefully do it again in Florida.

How can they suck so bad defensively, and yet Markstrom just faces a SOG count in the teens?
