It is!

What I notice right off, with the aroma, it's a bit woody, hint of crackers, and a fruity note I can't quite peg. The taste is a war at first, is it beer, is it whiskey, is it both. The whiskey barrels it's aged in really leave their mark, but not at the cost of being overwhelming.

Assertive spiciness from the Rye and the alcohol, this bad boy clocks in at 12%. Maybe it's all psychological but the rye as it warms just reminds me so much of a juicy Reuben sandwich. I can almost freaking taste that sandwich now. And through it all, this absolutely mesmerizing sweetness, perfectly balanced with the spice, the alcohol, that woody note. One of the adjuncts listed on the Blvd page for this one is brown sugar, a master stroke to include it.

A trace of a oaken vanilla character just lurking in the background. Dry warm alcohol finish with the perfect hit of spice.

If you can find it grab it. Grab all you can since it's a seasonal. A religious and borderline sexual experience for rye beer lovers. THE single best rye beer I've ever had. Even though it's not an IPA like Founders Red's Rye or Sierra Nevada Ruthless Rye, it blows them out of the water. Hopefully I haven't oversold this one, but damn I love this beer.

Edit: Checks in at #3 on the BA list of the top 50 Rye beers, actually in a tie with Founders Red's Rye for #2.

Well, you didn't steer me wrong on the porters, so it looks like I will follow your lead on the ryes as well. Are all of them seasonal or just this particular one?

I don't have a lot of experience with rye beers, I've only tried four. The Blvd Rye-on-Rye, Founders Red's Rye PA, Sierra Nevada Ruthless Rye IPA, and Great Divide Hoss Rye Lager. The Great Divide Hoss is the only one that's a year round beer. Founders website lists the draft variety of Red's Rye as a year round, but the bottles are only available in September and October. Ruthless and Rye-on-Rye are both strictly seasonal.

The rye beers are a fairly new thing for me, but I've quickly developed a taste for them. I really dig that spiciness that the rye adds to the beer. Makes it jump, and in an IPA, magic. Just be sure to have a reuben sandwich handy. Never had one of those beers that I wasn't jonesing for that sandwich immediately after that first sip. The Rye-on-Rye, right in the middle, as the flavor builds to it's peak, you can almost taste that rye bread,

I'm taking suggestions for this upcoming weekend. definitely going w/another four pack of Abbey Ale, but need something new. Maybe I will seek out one of NWO's rye beers.

I am finishing up the last of my Lagunitas Sucks. This beer grew on me. I began liking it, and now I am hooked. The burnt orange color is stunning, but also, as I have had more I realize it's not just a thin citrusy (if that's a word) pilsner-with-lemon-zest thrown in type beer. It really is more complex than that, and smoother than one would think.

i will more than likely have a sixer of this in stock over the Summer months, assuming availability.

Stopped at the merchant to reload, and grabbed a sixer of DFH Indian Brown Ale, a big bottle of Trois Pistoles, and another of Robert Johnson Hellhound.

Nice variety, methinks. Especially looking forward to the DFH. That's a new one for me.

Speaking of DFH and our earlier conversation about rye beers, keep an eye out for their beer called Ryehoboth. Found that one while doing some research. I haven't had the honor of trying one of their beers, but since I knew your into DFH brews and wanted to try rye, viola.

Thanks for the tip, will do! I was going to check out some ryes tonight but I was parked illegally and needed to get in and out, so I grabbed more familiar brews rather than perusing.

Liberty Brewing - C!tra Double IPA.

I bought this beer to see what all the Citra commotion was about. And I'll tell ya, this is a cracking beer. The aroma is slightly dank, musty. The first taste was a bit of a punch in the face with the hops, just how I like it. Crisp taste, but it still has a good malt backbone. The color of the head was slightly beige. Really nice mouthfeel. Not too thick and thin enough to let the hops come forward without compromising on the complexity of the beer.

I'd love to know if this was hopped exclusively with citra. I will certainly be doing all I can to get some of these hops on the next harvest season.
