Default Holland or Marcum

Yahoo standard cats.
Looking for my 4th SP to protect.

I just made a deal to get Gio Gonzalez (to add to Hamels and Greinke).

I'm leaning toward the younger Holland.
Am I wrong?

I would take Marcum, I don't trust Holland. He has some good stretches, but otherwise he's mediocre.

Thanks. I'm still trying to move one of the two for a closer, which will make things easier to decide as well. Holland, due to his age, might be easier to deal.

I'd look at keeping Holland, unless of course you can move him for something of more value. Marcum's best days are behind him and you have a better chance getting a big season from Holland than Marcum, worst case scenario Holland is a bust and you scour the waiver wire and grab a replacement. Lots of pitchers come out of the blue every year. But Holland's upside much greater than Marcum's and Texas should score runs for him.

This is partly true, but I'm not convinced Marcum's best days are behind him. He's moving into a pitchers park and pitching for a team with low expectations, therefore there isn't much pressure on him. He's not an ace, he never really will be. He could be a sneaky value play this year because of his situation.

Holland has the upside, but he's in a hitters park and is a few years away from reaching it. Holland's lowest career ERA thus far in the major leagues is 3.95 and his highest is 6.12. The other good indication for pitchers is WHIP and I'm not very impressed with those numbers by Holland as shown below.

2009- 1.496
2010- 1.378
2011- 1.354
2012- 1.221

I just think Marcum is the better choice here, he's proven that he can pitch to an ERA around 3.5 and don't forget that Toronto and Milwaukee are both hitters parks! Citi field will be a nice change for Marcum.
