The Flyers have just announced that Pronger will will speak to the media at noon.
I would have thought that the Flyers wouldn't want him to retire, given that his contract is a 35+ contract. So... |

interesting...if he can't play any longer, he might as well retire, even if his contract remains on the books
maybe they can trade his contract to a team in need of reaching the salary cap floor, like Thomas to the Islanders.

Maybe the Flyers don't want this but at the end of the day it's his decision, if that's what he ultimately does.

Right now he gets his money and the Flyers can work around his cap hit by putting him on LTIR. Win/win.
If he retires he won't get money anymore and the Flyers will be stuck with his cap hit for the duration of his contract. Lose/lose. This will be interesting.

Isn't retiring, and being forced to retire due to injury 2 different things?
I mean, if he is eligible for LTIR why would the flyers all of a sudden have to pay for his contract if he is forced to retire due to his injury. (there is a good video on Sportsnet. Part 1 of of a couple. Interview with Pronger.) |

He isn't retiring. Told the media that is he hoping to return eventually but everyone knows that'll be impossible.
Suffered Depression, major eye issues, peripheral is shot, cant do anything fast, sees spe******ts every week. Advises players and coaches right now. LTIR is the only way Flyers will go to avoid 4.9 on the books until 2017. I'm hoping he gets better and gets on the ice for one shift so we amneisty his contract.

Savard counts against the cap to start the season? and then gets moved to LTIR every year after the season starts? Just asking the question Dakkster. I have heard many players have career ending injuries. I just didn't know how the paperwork is handled. |

Exactly. I'm not entirely clear on exactly when the player goes on LTIR, if it's during pre-season or the regular season or if they can do it in the offseason, but that's how it works.
Putting the player on LTIR means that the team can spend up to that amount over the cap if necessary. How any insurance issues are handled are beyond me too, so I'm not sure if it's Snider paying Pronger or if it's their insurance company. I think there may be more info about it on capgeek.com. At least Savard's and Pronger's cap hits/salaries are there.
