I'm in the same situation. Was stoked to see Phaneuf have a solid season last year, but geez this year has been just awful.

Funny too that every other player slump (Kessel, Weber, etc) has been discussed at length...and no love for Phaneuf.

Probably shop him once he turns things around b/c I'm afraid these inconstancies will occur in the future.

Don't worry... now that Kessel has finally scored a goal, I'm sure the Toronto media will turn its attention to shitty Phaneuf.

That guy is such an overrated piece of shit. He couldn't hit the side of a barn with his slapshot yet he managed to hit Lupul right in the elbow. The only redeeming quality about him is that he's banging Elisha Cuthbert.

Do what I did! Trade his ASS for Gardiner! When They finally call him up he will dominate on the PP in Toronto. Do it now before they call him back from the Marlies. This kid is truly the real deal in my eyes

It continues to astound me how little credit Phaneuf gets.

For all those comments about "couldn't hit the broadside of the barn" or "always hitting the boards," he's still consistently top 10 for defense shots and has only been below 200 shots once in his career (the year he was injured). He's also been below 4 percent shooting only once and has a respectable 5.9 (as a dman).

Offensively he was still top 15 in defense points last season on a team that had a rookie dman as the next best dman.

He's struggling right now but thats the result of being overworked and being place with a guy better suited to being a depth dman. Toronto needs to find another top line dman to take the pressure off of Phanuef. It would help wondrously.

And yet he's still one of the best multi-cat producers in hockey.

I completely agree. He's good for 40+ pts with PPP, PIM and SOG totals that make him even more valuable. If your league counts hits as well, then he's probably a top five dman.

Phaneuf may be a prick off the ice, but I could care less. He's been great for my fantasy teams.

For what it's worth, I liked the way he played last night against the Habs, particularly on the power play. He was not trying to shoot the puck every time he had it, which is good to see. He wasn't overused in the game, playing just over 24 minutes. He picked the right time to shoot when on the two-man advantage as well.

Look at his line from last night: G, A, +1, 2 SOG, 5 HITS, 1 BLOCK.

I think if he makes the first pass more often and just plays his game, the points will come.

This is the key to his game. He's a talented player but when he's trying to be superman for the Leafs, he gets burned...a lot. He's a top line guy, likely even a number 1 (average probably) but he's not the kind of guy to put the team on his shoulders and carry it single handily. That goes to the idea he needs a capable partner to truly see him play his game. He needs his Suter, a guy that allows him to take chances, make aggressive highlight reel hits, and be that dominant dman. By himself (and with Mike Kostka) he has to paly conservatively and will tire out, meaning less rushes, less big hits.

When he plays his game, he's one of the best. He's scoring, hitting, shooting, playing a way that makes the other team keep their heads up. This brings me to my next point. I had a theory around his first full season as a Leaf that I think still holds water now. I think he needs to be physically engaged to play that game. When he's laying those big hits he just seems more involved. It's almost like its give him that cockiness (in a good way) that just lends to his confidence. He plays like he's one of the best on the ice and if you get in his way, he's going to make you pay.

Some of the times he's shown his most dominant offensive game, have come when he's laying those big eye opening hits. When he's playing on the edge of the cliff and not like he's being told to play 5 meters away from it.7

I don't necessarily blame Phanuef for this or even coaching staff, its more of a situational necessity. After Phaneuf the team is largely devoid of impact dman. Gardiner has potential, Gunnarson is solid, Franson's got a killer shot and Kostka has a great story but really none of them come close to be top line dman...at least at this point in time.

But this means you're going to get the Phaneuf you had last year. He's reliable, and will get you points and good peripherals. 40 points, top ten in shots, contributing a high amount of hits/PIMs/blocks but not always hitting that top of his game stride for a long period of time. If the Leafs can get someone to play with him though, you could see a much more dominant Phaneuf for a much longer period of time.

I also find it amusing how lowly Phaneuf is regarded in these forums, as well as in my leagues. In multi-cat leagues like mine, which count hits, bs, PIM, sog, Phaneuf is money in the bank and a top 5 dman........there are very few dmen that can contribute across the board like Phaneuf can. Even when he isn't putting up points, he's chipping in with fantastic peripherals.

I think he is a prime example of how people's bias can cloud their judgement. Is Phaneuf a douche in real life? Yes. Do I dislike him both as a player and as a person? Yes. Will I take advantage of people pushing him way down their draft lists for these reasons? Most definitely. Snagged his as the 11th dman off the board in my multi-cat keeper league and not looking back.
