So I have the opportunity for a job with a local brewery... but the pay is largely commission-based, the benefits and hours are worse than where I am now... but I get 12 beer per week.

Decisions, decisions...

Depends on the brewery I suppose. If it was Russian River it would be much better than if it was Lucky... hell I wouldn't even take free Lucky (actually I would, so that I could sell it and buy some decent stuff)

What's your current job status? Happy? Room for growth? Pay increases?

What's the brewery? A job in the beer world could be cool, especially if it also has a room for you to grow with the company.......

How are your sales skills?

Details.........It sounds like this could be a pretty major decision.

Current job status = wanting to get into a different field and am looking for other jobs but am not in a rush. Job I'm in now has fantastic benefits, is easy, and I make a comfortable wage. Don't want to stay here long term though and management isn't great.

Brewery is Alley Kat. I'm in Sales now but I do Inside Sales on salary right now and this would be Outside Sales with commission/salary split, not set hours, etc. Also benefits are pretty much 1/4 of what I get now as far as Health, Dental, etc., if that. Factoring in average commission, pay would be roughly equal (obviously potential for it to be less or more based on my sales skills).

Well, they're certainly an established brewery, and quite well regarded in your area. My brother in law lives in Calgary, so I've sample quite a few of their brews...I enjoy it, though it's not super easy to find out West here. It's tough to leave the relative safety net you have going with the great benefits, easy job, pay etc.

It sound slike you're really looking at making a change. It sound super exciting to me, and being that you're already in sales....you'd probably have to work harder and knowing pay is not all salary, you'd probably have an opportunity to do even better.

I'm no life coach, but it sounds like you've been waiting for something like this.......and I just can't help but think Alberta is still lagging behind a bit in the craft beer market.

Decisions....decisions......

Thing is I'm not particularly interested in Sales, especially if it's commission driven. This just happened to be what they had openings for and given my sales experience they were interested in me.

Like I've applied for other jobs and they're all radically different from what I do now - Business development for the government, research for a study on addiction, purchasing for a university, etc.

Money's never been a huge thing for me so biggest things for me is interesting work, decent benefits, and set hours/no more than 40hrs/wk are a bonus.

I've heard about a fair number of guys (from reading the Boards on Beer Advocate) who just got their foot in the door with a brewery and then went off in all sorts of directions within the company.....some started to brew, manage, market/advertise......

Keep us posted and good luck; you know we'll want to hear more about this!

Yea, will have to think on it. Thanks for the advice!

On a more beer-related note, Hennepin on tap is excellent
