I'm thinking 36pts/48gms. That's still a .75ppg pace, equivalent to a 60pt season.

44 in 48? I'm not saying its impossible, but check the history books and tell me how many rookie defencemen scored that many points. It would be incredibly impressive if he managed to score 44 in 82 games. Only a few defencemen have done that in their rookie year in the past decade.

Check how many rookie AHL defenders scored 48 in their first 34 AHL games.

Schultz is in a different position than many normal rookie defenders. Not only does he have elite skill, he gets to quarter back the PP with a couple of 1st overall picks, and Eberle.

Unique situation for sure. Comparing player to player has it's cons, especially when your not addressing the situation either. I hate comparisons.

Schultz should end up a top 10 defender in the league this year. And over the last 3 years that is a 46-49 point pace over 82 games. In 48 games that equates to 28 points.

If you think he is a top 5 defender, expect 33ish points. 28-33 is where I would predict his point totals this year.

At that is a lot, for a defender, who is a rookie....but given his situation and skill, its more than possible.

Anything is possible. I just feel given what history has shown us, it is highly improbable. I dont give two shits about what someone does in the AHL. Show me how many other defenceman played with an NHL line while in the AHL. I mean come on. May as well look at their midget stats as well.

I wish I had Schultz on my team right about now. Sounds like you could get a truly excellent return.

It's hard not to get sucked into early season success. I remember in 2008-09 when Markov opened the season with points in his first seven games and 16 points in his first 12 and thought he could go for 80. Well he ended up with 64 that season. When the points are coming so easy early in the year it's hard to see how they wouldn't continue but there's always some sort of stumble.

Seems like you don't care about anything except NHL stats. Which is fine. But it helps trying to forecast what a player might get in the NHL by looking at all their stats, including midge (when available)

Schultz is good. I mean for a rookie to be having that impact, he is damn good.

I am going to take the political answer on this one and just say "Why not a Norris?"

The fact of the matter is that this kid has been AT LEAST a ppg players since he was a sophomore in college. Ever since he hit that plateau, he has been able to maintain that pace at every level he has reached.

http://www.hockeydb.com/ihdb/stats/p...php?pid=113177

The argument against him would have been that he would not be able to maintain this at the NHL level, however that does not seem to be the case...at this time.

The big thing to remember this year is that Justin Schultz has to inevitabley fade. He has never played more than 48 games in a single season and he is already almost to that point. You add in the fact of wear and tear on his body from going against bigger and better competition and he will most likley gain a fairly nagging injury (groin, wrist, shoulder, etc) that will limit his offensive production.

In summary, he has the talent to be a Norris contender, however the odds on that are very slim given what he still has in front of him.
