If I'm not mistaken the only way someone could have claimed one and kept him is by keeping him on the NHL roster. Most teams have their goaltending situation "sorted" at this point in the year. Lots of teams would want these guys just not on the 23-man roster.

I agree with the sentiment. I actually wish the rules were such that a team could claim a guy AND send him to the minors just to make things more punitive/exciting but that completely defeats the spirit of the waiver rules, which were put in to keep NHL calibre players in the NHL and not just to allow for player movement.
