yeah that's actually why I asked because Netflix has a lot of the good BBC shows like Sherlock, Doc Martin, Downton Abbey, Doctor Who, etc

Then maybe in a couple of years with a new idea you make another great one season show and sell it as "from the creators of" and then keep killing it with one season runs. I think that's where TV should try to head. They won't because executives and writers alike need tent pole shows that are proven ratings generators to build new stuff around.
that's why the best tv often gets the lowest viewership numbers. most people like to watch mind numbing garbage. shows like the wire hang on by their fingernails on subscription based networks, and they lose money because very few people watch them.

It's true. Look at critically adored comedies like Arrested Development and Community. Brilliant shows that few people find a way to enjoy but somehow Two Broke Girls kills it every week. That's a fail by North America in general.

Bill Simmons spoke highly of season 1 on one of his podcasts but I do remember hearing a lot of negative talk about season 2. It will have to wait till the summer. With hockey back my Netflix watching will decrease dramatically!

Can anyone tell me more about Downtown Abbey? I'm really interested in getting into this show, but isn't it a UK based show? Or has the US aired it from the start on a network here? I heard something about it being on PBS, but I wasn't sure if it was the real thing.

Still no word yet if Alphas will be picked up for a 3rd season.

started watching 4400 on season 2 ep. 8...not bad.

With the.NHL back I will probably hold off on watching any more new shows.....just will stick to The Walking Dead, American Horror.Story.....oh wait nevermind. Definitely going to give "The Americans" a chance. Starts Jan. 30 on FX

Shameless (US version) is a pretty good show.
Wife & I watched first two seasons... entertaining.

What's really funny is that the main character (William H. Macy) also does the narrator voice for a kid's cartoon of Curious George.

It's one of those things that makes the show even more enjoyable!!
