There's a reason we don't do these kinds of predictions because when Ovechkin posts 90 plus points again under the tutelage of Oats then he'll be in the top 4 again.

In all the replies I read, the highest anyonne had him was 4th, after that 5th and then I think 9th or 10th.

Heck, some of you didn't even have him listed! (One of you also forgot Malkin )

I would. Love to revisit this in 3 seasons and take a look at the standings and see who was closest

Writing from my blackberry (yes I still have one!) So my prediction will be forthcoming and I will let you know now that he won't be lower than 2nd.

Just my 2c
I didnt list him in my top 15 because I dont see him getting back to that point again. The skill level is there (now, but is declining) but his problem isnt the skill. His problem is the attitude. He just doesnt seem to want to compete the way he used to. If you think this is what Adam Oates will bring to the table, all the power to ya. I have my doubts and there's too many other skilled players with more heart and desire to place in my top 15, five years from now. Until he does something to prove me wrong, I will stick with him NOT being in the top 15 scorers, next year or any other year going forward.

Thats the fun part of doing these, it's simply our own opinion. This just happens to be mine.

Ovechkin will be 32 in 5 years. This doesnt mean he will automatically suck, but it does increase the chances that he declines in output getting passed by the younger guys, gets injured more often based on how he plays, or isnt even in the nhl anymore!

I left Ovechkin off my list.
I think he'll be a top 10 player for 1-2 more years... but I believe that young Oilers group is all going to explode soon and that's 3-4 players that could jump him.

Ovechkin's game/style reminds me most similarly of Pavel Bure. Goalscorers just typically seem to wear down a little faster & earlier in their careers.
Bure put up monster years through the age of 30 (2001, born in '71) and then hit the wall with NYR.
Another potentially comparable Russian player is Alexander Mogilny.
Mogilny was pretty solid through the age of 32... but 3 of his 4 years after that were sub-PPG.

My biggest concern with Ovechkin is that he has that monster contract that pays him $10m/year through 2021 (another 8 years!). I don't know... at the age of 27, knowing you've got another 8 years of $10m coming your way... how hard is somebody going to try to stay at the top of their game. I have serious doubts about him putting up 90pts ever again.

Thanks Steamer! I love threads like this!

Based on the 7 seasons since the lockout, the average top 15 scorer by years from draft are:

(0-2) - 1.43
(3-5) - 3.00
(6-8) - 3.14
(9-11) - 4.00
(12-14) - 1.57
(15 +) - 1.86

Generally the players were 1st rounders – and a majority are high 1st rounders. (Martin St Louis was the freak outlier being in the top 15 four times after never being drafted!)

Most under-rated (by me) – Joe Thornton was on the most (six of seven) top 15’s. Respect!

So if we’re talking about the 2017-18 season, I’ll take

1 guy from the 2015-17 drafts – Connor McDavid
3 from the 2012-14 – Yakupov, McKinnon, Galchenyuk
3 from the 2009-11 – Tavares, Seguin, RNH
4 from the 2006-08 – Kessel, Stamkos, Eberle, Schultz (strictly a hope & prayer since I have him in my league – only Karlsson made a top 15 as a D)
2 from 2003-05 – Eric Staal, Malkin
2 from 2002 and prior – Sedin, Sedin

Notable omissions due to injury risks/playing style – Crosby, Hall, Giroux
Notable omissions due to flakiness – Ovechkin, Kane

Interesting way of looking at it. I love the omissions due to flakiness.

LOVE the omissions due to flakiness! But, I have to ask...are you suggesting P.Kane or E.Kane, as both could be viewed as a little flaky!?!?

You got me excited, as a Jets fan and E.Kane owner, when you suggested the flaky Kane as a top end scorer! In the back of my head, I knew it was Patrick, but I was just hoping
