Patrick Mooney of CSN Chicago reports that the Cubs have signed free agent right-hander Edwin Jackson to a four-year, $52 million contract.

A bit of an overpayment, but not the biggest I've ever seen. I'm just surprised that the Cubs are spending this much on anybody right now.

Actualy they are doing a good job IMO of spending. They get 8 total years of Edwin Jackson, Scott Feldman, Carlos Villanueva and Scott Baker for about $75 million total combined. They were gonna spend $80 mil on just Anibal Sanchez alone, before Detroit got back in the mix and signed him. This gives the Cubs depth to be able to unload Garza once he shows he's healthy and the Cubs will then get more young prospects to continue to re-tool. They already have a very good nucleus of a prosepct core as it is now. I believe Theo and Jed are doing a very sound job of spending wisely and not shedding to much money for any one player.

Last season was a down one for Jackson but his three year average for Wins Above Replacement is 3.5. The going rate for WAR is about $5.5 million per year per win so if anything this is an underpay. Especially when you consider salary inflation will continue as TV revenues pour in.
