Default Re:phaneuf for backstrom (washington)

do\'nt forget the keenan affect , mind you it might be a good thing for a guy like phaneuf , but i would wait and see what backstrom does first , then if he is slumping you can still trade high as someone will still realize his potential value.i\'ve gone after phaneuf as well but would not make this move before i test drive those new wheels!

I just want to push my \"credit rating\" up towards expert :P

As for the question....I have a feeling about Backstrom...I am gonna go off the beaten path and say take Backstrom for two.

Speaking of \"credit rating\"...I had a Karma rating of 1 for about an hour...and then it went back down to 0....what gives? B)

You must have said something someone didn\'t want to hear. The Kharma points are very fickle.

In my mind, you play fantasy hockey to win. If he\'s strong at forward (he says he is) and this is the only trade he can make to jack his defense he should do it. Keeping backstrom another two years is silly if he\'s deep at forward and he doesn\'t win his league.

Since there is no chance of resigning guys, I think he should go with phaneuf (50 points last year as a defender) over a guy that hasn\'t proven that he\'ll get more than 50 points next year.

Don\'t hate me for saying that... I have the guy in my keeper league. I like him a lot too... but you just never know how a player will develop in the NHL. It\'s chancy. What happens if two months into the season phaneuf is averaging a point a game and backstrom isn\'t doing well? He won\'t be able to pull this trade then.

If you\'re pushing for the championship you have to make hard moves and hard decisions. In keeper leagues where you lose your players its incredibly difficult (if not near impossible) to win two years in a row (when you win, you get the worst draft position to restock your team).

He should make a big push and really go for it next year, and then start selling off his older guys for picks (to guys who are pushing next season), so that he can get backstrom back on his team at the end of the 2nd season.

That\'s how I would play it.

P.S. Do make sure that this is the only thing you can do to get a 50+ point defender. If you can do something else and keep backstrom, It\'d probably be better for you, and you wouldn\'t hate yourself if he gets 100 points in the second year.

Lanky: Where did you learn to dance like that?

I agree with you that if you are going for the championship and a 50 point defenceman is \'your need\' then you might have to \'up the ante\'.

I was just looking at it from the perspective of \'which would I rather own now\' without considering the build of the team.

I digress. We are talking about 2 years of Backstrom compared to 1 year of Phaneuf, STRAIGHT UP? I am sorry, in my world, I don\'t mean to be disrespectful and there are a lot of more knowledgeable people than I but I would certainly go with Backstrom. The upside of Backstrom with Ovechkin or Semin has to be higher than what Phaneuf would do for you. Did I miss something? No disrespect intended.
No disrespect taken. The way I look at it if I am playing to win next year and Backstrom gets 75 points and Dion gets 55pts 100 pims I am much better off with Phaneuf. Phaneuf is the only good D available between now and our draft. I have a really good shot at winning next year. I would love to go for back-to-back titles but I lose some key guys after next year.

I am thinking now though Backstrom\'s trade value is going to grow through the year while Phaneuf\'s is already known. I am going to stick with the kid!

Thanks again for the advice all
