This is a no-brainer. Take the deal and run. You get to enjoy the last cheap years of Quick's and Stepan's contracts (if there's a season) and then in the off-season you can move Quick for someone much better than Crawford and Stepan for someone much better than MacDonald. Or you can keep them, especially Quick who'd be your best player. There's nothing to lose for you in this deal.

In any format there is no substitute for having the best trade chips in your hands.

Absolutely take the deal. Worry about the salary crunch later. You'll have time to try to make up some value between now and then.

Replying to this thread seems pretty pointless now, but take the deal. Salary or not (unless your cap is super low) you come so far out ahead in the trade you can't pass it up. MacDonald is almost a non-factor on your end....he gives you blocks but that's about it. He's a 20-25 point defenseman as long as he's not getting PP time (which he won't for the forseeable future). You're dealing Crawford at his absolute low point for a huge bounty.

In 2013-14, Quick will make 7 million and Stepan will probably sign around 3-3.5....can't see him getting much more than that especially with this lost season. Crawford will make 2.5 in 2013, with MacDonald at .575.....so in 2013-14 you'll be taking on about 7 million in salary.

That's a big jump but I don't see why you would have to dump Thornton, Brodeur, Kulikov, and someone else just for that. Drop Brodeur (5m) and Stafford (4m) and you have a net gain of ~2 million in cap space. Or trade Stafford for a pick, either way salary is not a reason to pass on this deal.

There are several months (maybe more than a year) before this even becomes an issue. Plenty of time to put feelers out there and see what bites. One time I added Iginla which put my team over cap and then I traded Ballard to get back under cap. Net gain in a huge way.

Well ya, I should have mentioned I meant to drop those players next October if necessary. For now keep all of them.

If I accept this deal, it will have major salary complications for next season when Quick jumps to $7mil and Stepan will also get a new contract increase as well. I get the superior players but he's dumping his salary on me to get a cheap option. I thought about the whole thing, I would need to release Thornton, Brodeur, Kullikov, and one more playerr to make the salary cap work, or trade them for picks if I can. I have an idea of what I want to do but let me know what all of you people think. Rep as always.
See if you can get rid of Cowen instead of Kulikov. He is gone for the season
