Add another vote for Malwarebytes and superantispyware, they've cleared a few nasty infections for me. I particularly enjoy the ones you have to restart in safe-mode to even get Malwarebytes to run... bah.

I would also check the possibility that somebody is piggy-backing your internet using your wireless information. Up the security on your ISP information; certainly change the password.

It's happening both at home and at the library though.

If you get any pop-ups at any point google them to find out more. There is always a removal procedure and sometimes it extends beyond just using malware removal software.

Oh no! Going nowhere good, fast!

I'd vote for the spyware eliminator as well. You could also run through your processes in Task Manager to see if you could locate it there. Or, try starting up in safe mode (F8 IIRC - Mac user here) and see if you are still getting the high bandwidth usage.

That kind of data usage increase almost sounds like an open mail relay.
In addition to the scans mentioned earlier, I would check online to see if your IP address has been blacklisted. If so, you will need to clean up the infection and also send in a request to get removed from any blacklist.

Thanks for all your suggestions.

I think it started (or I noticed it) when on this site and after clicking a link on one of the threads - might have been the 'drunk' guy one? Not sure and won't assume, but it was around that time. I was on mobile broadband at the time, and then noticed a similar increase when at the library the following day. I'm on wireless now, recently signed off and haven't done anything yet since my last message above.

I'll get around to it soon. I'll look into it and update if/when I find out anything. Not sure how easy it will be to determine whether it has been fixed? I guess after running a full scan they'll tell me whether they detect something.

Anyway, thanks again.

EDIT: Just noticed this when I highlight the 'back' button. The following URL is displayed numerous times:

ib.adnxs.com/if/?enc=AAAA....

Has anyone seen this before? However, I've seen this on occasion before my sudden usage increase.

EDIT2: Another thing I've noticed is that since it's started, every time I've shut down my laptop there have been updates. This doesn't usually happen that often.

70mb of data send doing nothing? weird.

I would be curious to see your Task Manager > Processes.

Press CTRL+ALT+DLT. Select start task manager. Go to processes tab. Sort by Memory. Take a screen shot (press ALT+PRINT SCREEN). paste it into paint or photoshop or whatever and save it.
Here you go. I have no idea what I'm looking for.

EDIT: One hour after posting this, the top memory has gone up past 408MB.

I'm currently running a backup and full scan with Norton, then I will download Malwarebytes and run a scan with it.

EDIT2: Another half hour after the first edit, and now the top looks like this:

Do you have an ATI video card? If not, then the process atieclxx.exe may be the problem.

Have you tried downloading Microsoft Security Essentials. It's free and it might be worth a try.

Have you tried running in safe mode to see if the same problem repeats?

To be honest, I have no idea if any of this is working. That process was just randomly highlighted, so don't have a clue what could affect what. I downloaded Malwarebytes and did a full scan and it didn't find anything.

I went to system info and couldn't find my video card info - where would I look?

No I haven't downloaded MSE - would it affect my Norton security?

No I haven't tried it, as I wouldn't have thought of it nor would I know what to look for.

As you can see, my knowledge is extremely limited.
