Without skirting the question, I'd hold the #2 overall pick.
Yakupov or Mackinnon is a great reward... better than Granlund, I think.

Granlund is going to be 2nd fiddle to Mikko Koivu in Minnesota.
I don't see him to have the short-term potential of Yakupov or Mackinnon.

Instead of starting a new thread, I'd figure I'd just post the update here:

The deal, as it stands now, is

To the other guy: Granlund, 1st rounder next year, 5th rounder this year
To me: 1st (2nd overall this year), 2nd rounder next year, 4th next year, Pitkanen

My first rounders next year are expected to be low (say, around 10th out of 12, unless I win the draft lottery). He's an expansion team, so his picks will be high. So the difference between my first next year and his second next year should only be a few spots.

Personaly, I would keep Granlund and try to upgrade your 8th pick to snag Schultz.

Also, your first next year is going to get you a very good prospect.

schultz/granlund combo is also closer to making some impact and be better trade chips.

First, as has been pointed out and you have agreed with, your league needs to do it's draft regardless of any potential long term lock out.

Second, keep Granlund. He is closer to producing than anyone you might take with any of those picks and he WILL produce well. Plus considering that your league seem to make few picks I would have little worry about being the very last on the draft board since sooooo many excellent players will have been left behind from previous drafts.

If I had three top-tier rookies and was torn on which two to keep, I would consider this deal, though I don't love the part where you swap 2013 picks.

As it stands though, the only guy you have to step in to the keeper spot left by Granlund is Kadri (I am assuming you were already keeping Murphy) and Kadri just isn't good enough to justify the move. I am not nearly as down on him as a lot of folks are, but I think the chances of him ever being more than a perennial 60 point guy are pretty slim.

Thanks for all the feedback folks. Just wanted to give an update.

I didn't make the deal. In the end, I figured if I was going to trade Granlund, I'd rather wait and make sure I know what I'm getting back, as opposed to hoping certain things happen to make the deal a good one (ie- my league would have to agree to not have a draft).

And for those who commented about the league needing to have a draft: It went to a vote, and it was voted 7-3 to not have a draft. After a few owners complained some more, it came to a compromise of sorts. We will delay the draft until a season is announced. If the season does get cancelled at some point, we will hold a draft in Feb. So at some point this year, we will have a draft. It just may be later in the year than most other leagues are having it.
