Picked up my first 6-pack of Maximus. Great tasting beer! Recommend Founders Centennial IPA to those of you who enjoy it.

You're spot on, FHG. It's easy enough to get started if you have a homebrew shop nearby but can probably order online too. I'm lucky to be near 1 awesome shop and another decent one. Got the starter kit with all the basic stuff for around $60 (1/2 price coupon) a free 5 gallon glass carboy, 5 cases of free old returnable bottles. I've upgraded to 1 liter ez-caps, now bottling is a breeze. 5 gallon kettle was maybe $40? Other than a few odds and ends thats about all the money I've put into equipment. A wort chiller would be nice but in the winter I just set the covered kettle in a snowpile. I figure the beer I'm making is a little less than 1/4 of retail price and usually better. Pretty much spot on with your numbers. I highly recommend growing your own hops too. They grow like weeds, need no attention and cut a big chunk out of cost per batch and you can't beat a fresh hopped ale. Last year I did a fresh batch and froze enough for 3 more. Just bottled this years harvest ale tonight.

Yes I agree. Home brewing can be as complicated or as simple as you want. If you can open a couple metal cans and pour boiling water into a barrel, you can brew a simple beer.
Doing it with all the equipment and fresh ingredients is obviously gonna get you a better result tho.

Well, I am aware that the local beer store only had 120 Hop Zombies left so I bought 3 more tonight. So I drank one to celebrate.
 Total 9 left in the basement pantry. One other thing I realized tonight when I was putting those Hop Zombies away... I'm gonna run out of space in there soon. Might have to do a yard sale or just plain throw shit out so I have more room for my home brew. I bottle the current IPA batch up and there will be about 60-65 750ml bottles in there. When the next batch is ready, some hard decisions are going to have to be made about junk in the pantry.

The owner of my local homebrew shop (local legend) likens home brew to macaroni and cheese:
If you're into it Dyz, I'm sure there are plenty of homebrew shops in your town. The quality of them will vary (and rare are the shops that sell grain and fresh hops) but it's all available online too. Especially when you're starting out though, you want to find a shop where people know their brew so you can benefit from their experience while you sprint up that learning curve. Gotta love it. While little yeasties make my beer delicious, I've been stuck on Torpedo IPA. That is just an absolutely top-shelf beer.
