The Rare Vos...well, that kicks Hennepin's ass any day. Far more balanced amber ale. In fact, I thought the La Fin Du Monde was right on par w/ the Rare Vos. Both are exceptional.

The Three Philosophers is a quad, and I have zero experience with quads so I really don't know what to expect. My purpose for purchasing it was to get out of my comfort zone.

If anyone can recommend some grill recipes that would pair well with the Three Philosphers, I'd appreciate it.
I've had the Hennepin and liked it a lot... but if the Rare Vos is comparable to La Fin Du Monde, I may have to pass on the Rare Vos. I can get a 750ml bottle of La Fin Du Monde for like $8 whereas Rare Vos will run me $15.

You try Maudite yet or Trois Pistoles? Out of Trois Pistoles, Maudite, and La Fin Du Monde, the latter is actually probably my least favorite.

See I thought the Hennepin was on par with a Hoegaarden or Leffe - good but not great. I guess it depends if you prefer the orange notes up front or balanced throughout.

No I have not had those, but they are indeed on my 'To Do' list. The Ommegang website is very insightful with regard to description and food pairings.

Ah, for me Hennepin was a good step up from Hoegaarden.

Anyway, let me know how the 3 goes - I do love me a quad.

Uh...I don't disagree with that actually. Just try a Rare Vos, the amber color alone is worth the $$. Just once.....PUH-LEASE????

I'll keep ya posted on the 3 Phils. Judging by the description, it may be a post-meal libation. Notes of cherry and chocolate, definitely out of my comfort zone.

Quads are one of my favorite styles, even if they are hard to find around here. My experience is limited to Three Philosophers, Trappistes Rochefort 10, and Blvd Sixth Glass. And really it's more like Three Phils and Sixth Glass as I've only had one bottle of the Rochefort 10.

For me the Quads aren't really something I would want to have just as a drink by itself. They are best when paired with food, especially a cheese like Gouda or Havarti. Owing to my less sophisticated upbringing, and the fact I live in a BBQ hotspot, I also like to have some Sixth Glass along with beef brisket that I run through my smoker out back.

I don't see any reason that the others wouldn't work well with meals consisting of smoked meats. I think it's the malty sweetness and alcohol warmth and spicyness that works fantastically well with the nutty flavor from the wood and the spice notes from the rubs used to make BBQ, especially around here(KC area).

For me, I'll take the Rare Vos anyday over La Fin. Not trying to rag on La Fin, just find that I like Rare Vos that much more. In your case there Dyz, it's twice as expensive, but to me it's not twice as good. I still would pony up the dough to get it though as it's a really solid beer.

They're not hard to find online or at hardware stores....at least down here. Not sure about in Canada obviously. I've used Brinkmann smokers for years and I really like their products. The prices are reasonable and they're good quality as well. It's like anything else, the sky's the limit.

What's your living arrangement? Apartment? House? How much room do you have? What kind of price range are you looking at?
