Default Dobber Entry Draft (Adams) - Interesting draft

Well, I participated in the Dobber Entry Pool - Adams Division draft last night. It was interesting. I picked 3rd in the snake, Lundy-Crosby go 1-2. I take Malkin.

15 team Roto - weekly starts
G A PPP PIM +- Shots Hits
W SV GAA

Before you laugh at my Kipper/Anderson picks, 15 goalies were gone when I selected Kipper. Hiller and Holtby went right after for a grand total of 18 goalies in the first 30 picks. I panic and take Anderson on the way back. 23 goalies are taken by the end of Round 3 and I've got two decent tenders on weak teams. At least they should rack up the saves. By the time it gets back to me, I'm looking for production from the back end and and multi-cat forwards. The guy picking 15 is on autodraft, he is sitting with D.Sedin/Parise/Kessel/Nash/Richards/Skinner after 6. I write off PPPs. (He ends up with Markstrom and Harding in net...watch them end up starting)

I like my d in this format Phaneuf/Shattenkirk/Girardi/Erhroff/B.Smith/Seidenberg. If Smith jumps into the top 4 in Detroit and the 2nd PP unit, I'm golden. Not too much flash, but nice and steady across the board.

C/RW is pretty good. LW not so good. I stocked up on some potentially decent 2nd liners. Maybe Sharp gets LW eligibility along with Brayden Schenn(my favorite pick at #213). I'm looking for a big year from him.

Assists/Shots/Hits/Pims/+- I should be above average. Goals and PPP are going to be hard to come by.

My draft:

Round Pick Player Position
1. (3) Evgeni Malkin C,RW
2. (28) Miikka Kiprusoff G
3. (33) Craig Anderson G
4. (58) Patrick Sharp C,RW
5. (63) Dion Phaneuf D
6. (88) Ryan Callahan RW
7. (93) Joe Pavelski C,RW
8. (118) Kevin Shattenkirk D
9. (123) Brad Marchand C,LW
10. (148) Dan Girardi D
11. (153) Christian Ehrhoff D
12. (178) Marcus Foligno LW
13. (183) Martin Hanzal C
14. (208) Brendan Smith D
15. (213) Brayden Schenn C
16. (238) Dennis Seidenberg D
17. (243) Brooks Laich C
18. (268) R.J. Umberger LW
19. (273) Jaden Schwartz C
20. (298) David Booth LW
21. (303) Clarke MacArthur LW
22. (328) Curtis Glencross LW
23. (333) Jamie McGinn LW
24. (358) Matt Greene D
25. (363) Simon Despres D

i havent really looked at the draft info but im shocked that crosby goes ahead of malkin. isnt crosby just a C vs C/RW? even if crosby has an exceptional year, malkin should be just as good with like half the risk

Round Pick Player Position
1. (3) Evgeni Malkin C,RW
2. (28) Miikka Kiprusoff G
3. (33) Craig Anderson G
4. (58) Patrick Sharp C,RW
...
15. (213) Brayden Schenn C
...

I got Malkin at #4 in the Smythe Division last night.
Crosby (1), Lundqvist (2), Stamkos (3) led off the night... which was great to get a RW-eligible player there.

Like you, I also am big on Brayden Schenn... I think I got him around 16th or 17th around.
Yahoo! has him down in the 500s, but he's a big hitter who could be in line for 1st or 2nd line wing duties.

Sharp actually went at #9 in our league.
Unbelievable! I couldn't believe it.

I nabbed Bryzgalov at #27 (end of 2nd round) and then waited and got Varlamov at #57 (end of 4th round). Pretty happy with those.

We had a lot of elite D men go in the first 50 picks. (including 4 in the 2nd round: Karlsson, Chara, Buff-Daddy, Letang).
I was actually rooting people on to make those picks because it pushed the goalies back far enough where I didn't miss the run.

Overall, gotta say - I like your team.
I think you'll be a contender!

You've got a great team. I love your Brendan Smith pick, I really tought he was going to fall more than that as I had him pretty high (I'm Pad My Stats).

I am not a big fan of Schenn personnally but I do acknowledge that he will give you a boost in several cats.

Totally agree about the guy on auto-draft. He is definately got PPP lock down with that team (he even got Vanek late).

I actually remember writing several posts about this last year, about goalies & league depth.

In leagues with 15 or more teams, starting 2G, goalies SHOULD make up approximately 50% of the first 3-4 rounds.
This is because there is FINITE quantity of #1 goalies: 30... to go with 30 NHL teams.

And especially in a weekly league, teams can't simply stream in back-ups when they find out they are going to start the next day.

Smythe had distribution as:
5 goalies/15 in round 1.
5 goalies/15 in round 2.
5 goalies/15 in round 3.
8 goalies/15 in round 4. (23/60).
I'd say your league (Adams) was a little smarter about the value of goalies in this type of league (weekly: 15x2G).
And I'm blown away that horrorfan got Pavelec at pick #100. (Lucky, lucky... he was autodrafting, so I'm happy that he got a 2nd guy with your league's goalie run, because he certainly is smart enough to follow suit if he had been able to be there LIVE.)

It actually shocked me that almost every team in the Smythe took a "back-up" goalie.
I don't really understand this.
In a weekly pool, if one of your starters goes down... you are pretty much toast, because your back-up is only going to replace maybe 1 start per week. (Not the typical 2-3 of a #1 goalie).

Then again... in 1/10 cases, somebody will get injured and then that team will look brilliant for having a back-up.
Or having THE back-up that moves into that #1 spot.
But in the other 9/10 cases, back-up goalies are just a waste of a roster spot, IMO.
Anyways... I'm off on a tangent now.

I agree with your assesment. I actually took 2 backups , and I wasn't really sure about it. I will probably drop one now that you have said that. I picked Giggy to handcuff the Colorado goalies. Gustavsson was picked mostly because I don't believe in Howard really, and that Goldman is very high on the Monster in Detroit.
