Hey looking for some help on who to keep as my 2nd keeper D, all 3 have something good going for them.
Kronwall - with Lids gone is the #1 PP QB and history has shown with Lids out of the line up he produces really well Phaneuf - #1 D on an an improving Leafs team, not sure if Gardner or Liles will eat into his PP time Del Zotto - #1 PP QB on a great Rangers team, had a great season last year with 40+ pts and +20 Originally I was thinking Del Zotto but lately been thinking Kronwall may be the one to go with. I think it's between these two over Phaneuf but thought I'd throw him in to muddy the picture a bit. Any help would be appreciated. Thanks

I'd take MDZ myself. Another step forward and he's elite. It's just his 3rd year this year. Kronwall may get more minutes but Lidstrom is gone which hurts their pp

IMO I wouldn't consider Kronwall.
I think this conversation should be between MDZ and Phaneuf. Personally, I would probably take MDZ for the reasons you made...he's the undisputed #1 PP QB, and althought Phaneuf should also see plenty of PP time, there is the presence of Liles and Gardiner that could pose more of a threat. |

Phaneuf out of the three for me. He'll still be the top producing dman in Toronto. Dont be surprised if McDonagh cuts in on MDZ's pp time moving forward.

Might be the only one here, but goal heavy I would favor Kronwall.
Plus his situation is great in Detroit, he will have all the PP time left behind by Lidstrom. I see him scoring 12-15 goals and putting 45-50 points this year. MDZ would be a very close second choice, definitely has the tools to get better, but we'll see. Without the hits and the PIMS, Phaneuf is my third choice, plus I've got a hunch that Gardiner will be the offensive go-to guy under Carlyle. He was relied upon in that regard as soon as Carlyle came in and scored 11 points in 17 games if I recall correctly.

I've been watching Kronwall for years since his entrance onto the world stage with the baby Krowns. He is now one of the nastiest hitters in the league, hugely talented offensively, played the tough minutes and plenty of them, and has patiently waited for his chance under the tutelage of one of the best defencemen to play the game. Look out! My 2 cents.

You're right - a case could be made for either player.
Kronwall will have the best season next year out of the 3 because he will be put in the position to lead the Wings offensively from the back-end. He will log more PP time and will use his shot a lot more IMO. In a keeper format though, Kronwall is 30+ and is known for missing some time. In fact, last season was the ONLY time (in 8 years) that Kronwall played a full 82GP. So if you're placing more emphasis on the next 2 years, Kronwall is your man, and he blocks a decent amount of shots. Phaneuf is still a beast IMO. Although he will most likely never hit 20G/60Pts again, he has the shot and opportunity to hit 15G and flirt with 50Pts any given year. He won't deliver the +/- goods but he will gets his points and register more SOG than the other two. Del Zotto is just getting warmed up but I not completely sold on him just yet, or at least as much as others are. Could, he be a steady 45-55 point threat with a very respectable +/-? Sure. But there is still a bit of risk taking him over more proven guys like Dion or Kronwall. That said, what MDZ certainly has in his favor are: a great team and age. So he might be worth taking the risk. Long-term, if I am choosing it would come down to Phaneuf or Del Zotto for me. Although Kronwall will edge them for the next 1-2 years, I don't think it will be by much if he does, and the chance exists that he gets banged up and the other guys pass him by immediately. I think Phaneuf is as much of a sure thing as you'll find - the only thing that scares me is that he has Liles, Gardiner and Rielly as future PP competition, but his shot is so nasty, I think he continues to play the role of "Weber/Chara" on the top PP for a long time. He would be my choice.
