Hey all,
So it seems like my upgrading D offseason is not happening, have been denied by GM after GM. So, I have to focus on adding more young D to my roster and hope for the best. If available at my draft position, I am thinking this is the order I would take these guys, let me know your list and some thoughts. 1) Faulk - (Team has upgraded greatly, and combined with Mcbain could be a good duo moving forward) 2) Gardiner - (I'm a leaf fan! Kidding, well I am but, I think he is second on the list due to potential PP time) 3) B.Smith - (Young D in the Detroit organization, they have been looking and signing some guys, so he could drop off?) 4) Voynov - (I don't trust he will be fulltime 100%) 5) Petry - I just read about this guy, was totally out of my radar

NatureX,
I think your instincts are pretty bang on here - the ONLY change I would make is bumping up B.Smith into the #1 slot ahead of Gardiner and Faulk. Long-term, Smitty will be the best of the lot with Faulk 2nd IMO. The rest are in line: 1.) B.Smith 2.) Faulk 3.) Gardiner 4.) Voynov 5.) Petry

My list would look like this:
1. Faulk 2. Smith 3. Gardiner 4. Petry 5. Voynov I still think Faulk will be the main go to guy in ALL situations for Carolina and I like the direction they are heading. Smith is definitely worth moving up the list but I dont think he will be the top dog in Detroit over Kronwall. That being said, he is definitely worth of my #2 spot. If your league counted PIMs, he would have probably got top spot from me. Gardiner is another one I like and wont hurt you long term either. Petry is an interesting one. He will be top 4 in Edmonton for some time. He will get PP time and playing on an improving Oilers team wont hurt his +/- either. Voynov is too much of a wild card for me to put him very high. He falls to the bottom of my list. Good luck.

It seems like there have been a bunch of threads about these same guys lately so I would do a search and read them.
I think you have right idea with the rankings and the top 3 are all high quality prospects. I will say that although I do like Faulk's game a lot it seems that a lot of people are forgetting about Corvo and more importantly Pitkanen being on Carolina. Both of those guys have proven they can put up points at a good clip and I don't think the coaching staff will just throw them on the back burner in favour of the kids. I'm just not prepared to assume that Faulk and McBain will dominate in terms of PP time or offensive opportunities. I have to add that I'm not saying that Faulk can't produce in the short term but I would temper expectations slightly.

My view is a little different. I would take Voynov before any of them. He should out produce those guys. My second choice would be Faulk, then Petry, Gardiner and Smith.

I would move Voynov up to 2nd or 3rd on that list.
The kid is skilled offensively, and with Johnson shipped out, I bet he becomes a permanent top 4 guy on that team. He was eating some solid minutes during the playoffs... if that's not a sign of the team's confidence in him, I don't know what is. |
