He never accepted a salary cap (which Bettman tried already in the 1994-95 lockout) but in the end he was walked over and the players took the salary cap. Wouldn't call him a chump anymore than I'd call Bettman or Fehr a chump.
Point taken. "Chump" was probably too harsh. But you don't want a leader who gets walked over, or undermined by his own people. Then again, the NHLPA was a hilarious mess back then.
