I don't agree with rules like that. I would make an analogy with pending UFA in the NHL. Let's say (hypothetically) that a team has to re-sign during the summer Crosby, Ovechkin, Karlsson, Quick and Seguin. This same team knows that they won't be able to sign all of them, then they will probably try to trade one of their UFA to another team in exchange for compensation.
Pretty much the same thing as trading a keeper for a draft pick, IMO.
