What is it in the human psyche that makes us, when interacting over the phone or internet, try to visualize what the other party looks like? And why is it when you finally see the other person, 99.9% of the time the mental image doesn't match that person's appearance?

I've often wondered about that....what can I say....I'm easily bored and when I get bored my mind wanders off on odd tangents.
