Jeff Skinner, Ryan Nugent-Hopkins and Adam Henrique are just a few of the young NHL sensations who could potentially give the 2012-13 American Hockey League season some added star power.

Dozens of young players around the NHL were sent to the American Hockey League during the past week as teams assigned eligible players to the top-tier minor league before the NHL instituted a lockout upon the expiration of the current Collective Bargaining Agreement, which occurred Sunday.

SENS' MICHALEK INJURED, NOT LOCKED OUT
According to an Ottawa Sun report Monday, the 27-year-old winger suffered an abdominal injury while training last month in Montreal and needed surgery.
Even if training camp starts Friday at Scotiabank Place, Michalek won’t be ready. And if the Senators’ season opener, currently scheduled for Oct. 11, takes place, Michalek’s participation will be doubtful.

The injury makes Michalek, who scored a career-best 35 goals and 25 assists last season, the only player on the Senators roster who is not officially locked out by the NHL.

If the Czech-born star isn’t healthy by Oct. 11, under lockout rules he will receive his $4.5 million salary until he’s cleared to play.

Michalek is permitted to go the rink daily to receive treatment and use the facilities to work out. The Sun believes Michalek is the only Senators player allowed in the rink.

When the moment of truth arrived, the NHL and NHL Players' Association were nowhere near the bargaining table.

The sides remained so far apart in negotiations that no last-ditch attempt was even made before the league entered its fourth work stoppage in 20 years. Instead, the collective bargaining agreement quietly expired at midnight on Saturday and the NHL locked out its players.

"We spoke again today, and in light of the fact that neither party has indicated an intention to move off of its last proposal, we have decided that there is no point in convening a formal bargaining session," NHL deputy commissioner Bill Daly told The Canadian Press in an email. "We will keep in close contact in the coming days and if anything changes, I am sure we will be in touch."
